Religious Education - Curriculum Intent
Within Religious Education at Gurnard Primary School, our vision is to successfully provide all learners with an understanding of different religions around the world. This journey is designed with the intent to engage, enthuse and excite pupils by providing opportunities to explore the various religions and cultures that make up our shared world.
By it’s nature, Gurnard Primary school is a welcoming and inclusive school and this ethos extends throughout the teaching of RE. The curriculum is designed to encourage children to experience and learn more about different world faiths and diverse cultures, whilst showing respect and understanding of the variety of people’s beliefs.
During an RE lesson at Gurnard Primary School, pupils can build on their own experiences of religions as well as their own lives within out Gurnard community. This allows them to make connections between world faiths and their own values. They are given opportunities to ask questions, experience real-life religious festivals through immersion of visitors and workshops and discover wider-aspects of religions. This creates a sense of belonging within different aspects of the world, whilst also appreciating a religion’s commonality and diversity.
We believe that through our immersive and captivating lessons, our pupils are encouraged to develop their own sense of identity and belonging through their own self-awareness and reflection of religion. Together as school, we collectively build on children’s existing knowledge as well as what children have already experienced with religion in their lives. At Gurnard Primary School, an important aspect of RE is the encouragement children receive to be inquisitive within their own learning and the guidance they receive to help forge their own pathways to success.
