The Counseling Center offers an unpaid, part-time training experience to graduate students pursuing professional degrees in counseling, social work, or closely related disciplines. Minimum qualifications include one semester of previous clinical practicum experience (or equivalent), an understanding of diverse student populations, and knowledge about the ethics of mental healthcare. The Counseling Center may occasionally host student interns during their practicum experience, at the discretion of the Director with approval from the Dean of Students.
Preferred qualifications include experience with Motivational Interviewing, experience with diverse populations, interest in substance and alcohol use disorders, and experience with program development and evaluation.
Clients seen at Milner Student Health and Counseling center are exclusively Guilford College students. Our interns provide individual sessions, groups, and workshops, and will see a variety of presenting concerns. Typical diagnoses range from anxiety to depression and ADHD. We work with neurodivergent and neurotypical students, traditional and non-traditional age students, trans, cis, and non-binary students, undergraduate and graduate students, though to majority of our students are 18-25. Interns will also have the opportunity to table in our student union, assist with center-sponsored programing, and provide support to student organizations.
People from non-majority populations are strongly urged to apply.
The Center provides on-site individual supervision with a licensed mental health professional. The individual supervisor works to develop the trainee’s clinical skill through didactics, case conceptualization, and direct feedback on video- and audio-recorded therapy sessions. The Center remains in close contact with clinical training faculty at the trainee’s home institution.
Primary Responsibilities of the trainee include individual therapy, group therapy design and implementation, outreach, and consultation.
Trainees are evaluated each semester and are given direct, written feedback about their progress. Trainees also evaluate the Center and their supervisors each semester.
At times, there are also some limited opportunities available for undergraduate interns in public health and social media/graphic design. These opportunities are advertised via the Guilford College Employment site.
We are currently accepting resumes and cover letters for interns for the Fall 2024-Spring 2025 academic year. Please email us at counseling@guilford.edu, subject line "Internship."
