Welcome

We thank you for coming together in appreciation of scholarship across disciplines. We hope that you see many of the presentations this afternoon to celebrate the diversity and depth that helps Guilford College students shape the future. We wish to thank the Guilford College Board of Visitors, and Institutional Advancement for providing financial support for this event, and the Guilford College Friends of the Library for co-sponsoring this event. We also would also like to thank the entire community for their support of the GUS. Thanks also to the participants and the many faculty who have sponsored student presentations and otherwise assisted students in their work. We further appreciate the efforts of students and staff members from the departments who have helped organize and setup the symposium. Thank you again for your participation in this eleventh annual celebration of Guilford students’ work. GUS is a unique opportunity for students to present their work to a diverse group of students, faculty, and members of the community. We hope you find your experience rewarding!

History

The first Guilford Undergraduate Symposium was held in 2008 with 50 presentations in Dana Auditorium, King Hall, and Duke Memorial Hall representing disciplines across the campus. Since that beginning over 1000 Guilford students have participated in more than 800 presentations, representing all academic disciplines and a variety of displays of scholarship and creative work. Video, sculpture, readings, music, dance, talks, posters, exhibitions of art, costumes, and education resources, demonstrations, and some presentations that are simply unclassifiable have been part of GUS. GUS 2018 is the first to be held almost entirely in the Hege Library Academic Commons with additional events just outside, ending with a special, one-time Theatre performance in Sternberger Auditorium that will be simulcast into the Carnegie Room. GUS continues to be a signature annual event of the Guilford College academic experience.
