While we do have a course flexbook (digital textbook), you will also create and maintain a hard-copy spiral notebook for this class. This is your ESS Notebook . . . or just Science Notebook.
You will need a spiral notebook for this class. This will become your ESS Notebook.
With distance learning, your ESS Notebook takes the place of our more traditional tests. Therefore, there will be at least one major assessment of your ESS Notebook.
When we return to a traditional class setting, your ESS Notebook is the only assistive device you are allowed to use on your assessments. Therefore, the better you maintain your ESS Notebook, the more help it will be to you on the assessments.
Ideally, a 100-page spiral notebook works best. If you have large writing, or like to take up a lot of space on the page, you will probably want to go with a notebook that has more sheets in it. You can use a composition book if you'd like but most students find a composition book harder to work with when they are trying to take notes and work on the computer at the same time . . . but the choice is yours. Do what works best for you.
Digital notebooks are not allowed.
The next section explains how to prep your notebook for class.
If you start this class at the beginning of the semester, additional directions will be given in the Daily Class Announcements on how (and when) you need to complete these steps since we break up this process and do it in small chunks over the first couple weeks of the semester.
If you join the class late, you need to complete all the steps below as soon as possible. Unless you are instructed otherwise by your teacher (in person or via the Daily Class Announcements) do all of the following steps in the order they are presented.
Number the pages in your ESS notebook.
start with the bottom right-hand corner (outside corner) of first page - this is page ONE.
number the first 90 pages of your notebook. ODD number are always on the right-hand page of your "book" and EVEN numbers are always on the left-hand page of your book. Number the pages in the BOTTOM-OUTSIDE corners.
Page ONE is your cover page. You may decorate / organize it however you want but be sure to label it with the following information:
Full Name (first and last)
Title (Earth and Space Science Notebook)
Period (check Infinite Campus if you are not sure of the class period)
School year (current year is 2022-2023)
Pages TWO - SIX are reserved for your TABLE OF CONTENTS. Put "TABLE OF CONTENTS" as the heading at the top of page 2.
For all the remaining items (below), JUST PUT THE HEADER INFORMATION at the top of each of the pages and copy the header information into your table of contents (along with the correct page number). Leave the rest of the page blank. For now, do not access any of the links that you might find for items #4 - #74. Don't do this for two reasons:
We will add the content to your page as part of a class activity later.
If I come across new (better) material before we get to that activity as a class I will update the new links. If you try to get an early jumpstart, you might end up doubling your work.
