FREE Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR and First Aid courses offered for Health Pathway students

This is a two day, 2-hours/day course through the American Heart Association (AHA) for Basic Life Support (BLS). All students must complete hands-on skills testing and a written test and will then receive an AHA certified Basic Life Support CPR card that is active for 2 years. These courses are FREE for all GUHSD Health Pathway students (average cost for these courses in San Diego is $60).

Internships

Health Exploration After School Internship 2021-2022


Semester 2021 after school Health Exploration Internship is now closed.

This Shadow Health Internship provides students with an opportunity to explore patient care, interactions and diagnosis in a digital setting. It is for 11th and 12th graders. It takes place on the following campuses: West Hills, Santana, Monte Vista, Granite Hills and Valhalla High Schools. The internship will be a combination of digital hospital patient interactions,


More specifically, you will learn how to interact, diagnose and take care of patients with a variety of ailments using Shadow Health simulators. Communicating, examining, and documenting your medical findings will give you the opportunity to see if the medical profession is for you.


Additionally, you have the opportunity to practice specific skills learned in Shadow Health with a partner such as taking blood pressures, examining the eyes and ears or performing a neurological exam.


Upon completion will earn 50 hours of internship experience, fulfilling the requirement for either Gold or Silver GUHSD District Health Pathway completer status. You will also be awarded with a certificate and a scrub top.




Borrego Health Intership @ Centro Medico, El Cajon

This is an internship program in which students will have the opportunity to shadow a physician, nurse or other healthcare provider for a minimum of 4 hours a week after school. Students will gain exposure to the healthcare field, develop professional workplace skills, and receive a certificate with experience hours at the completion of the internship.

Requirements: GUHSD Health Pathway student, essay, minimum 16 yrs. old, minimum 3.0 GPA, "C" or better in all health pathway courses, teacher recommendation (forward to your preferred teacher)

Scripps' High School Exploration Program (HSEP)

Health Career Exploration Summer Institute (HESI)

This is a 4-week summer internship for GUHSD Health Pathway students at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in which students gain exposure to healthcare careers in the hospital by rotating through 10-15 hospital departments. Students also develop professional workplace skills and familiarize themselves with medical case studies.

Kaiser Permanente Junior Volunteer Program

This is an 8-week summer volunteer program in which students will be trained to serve as a Medical Center or Medical Office Guest Guide. In this role, they will offer directions, answer common questions, escort patients and provide wheelchair assistance to those in need. Each student will be partnered with an experienced volunteer who will provide mentorship, encouragement and support. If students demonstrate enthusiasm, reliability, good customer service skills and initiative during this time, they will be invited to continue as a permanent volunteer and will have opportunities to explore other volunteer positions.

Interested students that are at least 16 years old must submit an application when it is available. Neat, thorough and complete applications are critical to being invited for the interview process. Check the Kaiser website for more information and updates for 2020-2021.

Palomar Pathmaker Internship Level I

This 6-month internship at Palomar Hospital (Poway and Escondido) is designed to give high school students unprecedented access to the inner-workings of the hospital system. Level I interns support staff members or college-level interns (Level II) who provide guidance on what it takes to succeed in college and what it means to work in the healthcare industry. These students experience daily operations in a healthcare setting while assisting with patient care tasks.

Life Science Summer Institute

This paid 8-week summer internship allows students to complete a science project at one of several of San Diego’s world-renowned life sciences institutions.

Program Details:

  • Weeklong “boot camp” covering biotechnology lab skills and safety practices

  • Mentorship by a scientist and exposure to real-life science practices

  • College credit for the bootcamp at both Grossmont and Miramar College

Requirements: minimum 16 yrs old, 3.0 or higher GPA, commit to 40 hours per week

Resident Leadership Academy

This is a 20-hour training and internship with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency. The RLA is a community service project that aims to improve and benefit the health of your community.

San Diego Fire Department Girls Empowerment Camp

SAVE THE DATE – APRIL 17-18, 2021

This is a 2-day camp for teens ages 14-18 that includes hands-on training with firefighting tools and equipment, 360-degree exposure to public safety, career options, CPR/AED training.
