Reopening School Plan Addendum (Updated August 14, 2020):
The Garrison Union Free School District’s Reopening Plan for the 2020-2021 school year provides for full in-person instruction for students in grades K-8. The first day of school is Wednesday, September 2, 2020. The District is also planning for remote/distance learning model using iTutor.com through a contract with Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES. The remote/distance learning model is available to all students in grades K-8. Due to the myriad of decisions that need to be made to safely open school, parents will be asked to select either in-person or remote learning education for their child(ren) by no later than August 21, 2020. Parents who choose fulltime remote learning will be asked to make a 10-week commitment to this model.
Reopening School Plan (Updated August 7, 2020): (see latest addendum above dated August 14, 2020)
School Schedules
Specific schedules for in-person instruction will be finalized and communicated in late-August 2020, once family intent forms are collected and processed.
In-Person Instruction Model (with 100% of students in the building)
The Garrison School building is approximately 59,000 square feet, and currently has 204 students enrolled in grades K-8. Based on an analysis of our instructional space performed by Tetra Tech Architects & Engineers, we have determined that our school building will be able to accommodate all students in a fullday, in-person model. To accomplish this with 6 feet social distancing measures in place, some classrooms will need to be relocated and programs modified. For example, grades K-2 will be split into two sections using paraprofessionals to assist with the supervision of students (see below).
Grade level arrangements are as follows.
• Kindergarten (one class): Teacher/aide float between two adjacent classrooms
• Grade 1 (one class): Teacher/aide float between two adjacent classrooms
• Grade 2 (one class): Teacher/aide float between two adjacent classrooms
• Grade 3 (one class): The Library accommodates the grade level
• Grade 4 (two classes): Two classrooms accommodate the grade level
• Grade 5 (two classes): Two classrooms accommodate the grade level
• Grade 6 (two classes): Two classrooms accommodate the grade level
• Grade 7 (two classes): Two classrooms accommodate the grade level
• Grade 8 (two classes): Two classrooms accommodate the grade level
Hybrid Learning Model (with 50% of students in the building)
Half the students will attend in-person classes on Mondays and Tuesdays, and half attend in-person classes on Thursdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays, all students will participate in remote synchronous learning. The District will use this day as an opportunity to disinfect the building between cohorts of students.
To the extent possible, students will remain in cohorts. Cohorts will be determined by the student’s last name:
• Cohort A: Students with last names beginning with A-L
• Cohort B: Students with last names beginning with M-Z
Remote Learning Model (with 100% of students learning from home)
If we need to transition at any time to a remote learning model, we will maintain the integrity of the established school schedules to the greatest degree possible.
Teachers will be expected to plan and deliver lessons with synchronous, asynchronous, and independent/small group work components. Instruction will be standards-based and curriculum would be aligned to the New York Learning Standards. In addition, there will be regular substantial interaction between teachers and students.
Regular student engagement will be expected and daily attendance will be taken. Student work will be assessed and students would earn grades based on established criteria and adhering to our standard grading procedures for in-person and hybrid models.
If we need to implement a remote learning model, we will maintain the structure of school to provide a sense of normalcy to our students.
