Thank you for your interest in doctoral studies of our faculty. Below you will find information on steps starting from admittance procedures to obtaining academic degree.

How do I start studying in PhD Program?

There are two ways of enrollment in Doctoral Program of Georgian Technical University – acceptance procedures and mobility.

The time frame for submitting applications for students interested in studying at the Georgian Technical University is decided by be the Academic Council as well as members of the Faculty Temporary Examination Committee. Please keep an eye on our website.

A person with a Master's academic degree or equivalent has right to enroll and study in doctoral studies.

If master's degree is awarded by a foreign higher education institution, then you should first refer to the Education Quality Development Center (http://eqe.ge/geo/service/recognition).

Acceptance in Program

Those willing to study in Doctorate are required to submit at Faculty Dean’s office:

Application letter addressed to GTU Rector's office stating the name of Doctoral Program (2 copies)
Info on education and employment activities (CV) (2 copies). In case of you have previously authored scientific papers, participated in conferences or have other certificates, diplomas, patents, etc. the applicant should submit the materials and their copies.
Diploma certifying the required academic degree and diploma attachment and their copies (2-2 duplicates)
Identity card and its copy (2 copies)
2 photos, size 3X4 (cm), as well as its electronic version on the compact disc (CD).

The procedure for acceptance in Doctorate includes interview with the temporary examination commission.

Within one week from the date of admission to the doctorate and signing of enrollment order, doctoral student must register by filling and signing academic contract and financial agreement confirming payment of tuition fees.

Studying, teaching and research in doctoral studies

Each PhD program consists of study and research components and is completed by a doctoral thesis. Total Doctoral Program includes 180 credits;

The Program’s Study Component aims to deepen expertise of field and to give methodological skills, give necessary assistance in completing doctoral work and to prepare for future pedagogical and scientific activities. The total number of study component should not exceed 60 credits;

The Research Component of Doctorate Program aims to deepen the practical skills of independent scientific research, to form and develop professional research culture.

Compulsory Elements of Doctoral Program Component:

Scientific Communication Techniques - 4 credits;
Research Methods - 5 credits;
Teaching methods and education management - 6 credits;
Special courses related to Doctoral Program - 20 credits;
Thematic seminar 1 - 10 credits;
Thematic seminar 2 - 15 credits;

The compulsory elements of the Program's scientific and research component are:

Colloquium -1 - 30 credits;
Colloquium -2 - 30 credits;
Theoretical / experimental research - 15 credits;
Colloquium - 3 - 15 credits;
Completion of the thesis, protection - 30 credits.

Approval of Scientific supervisor/ doctoral adviser and Dissertation committees.

Within a month after the commencement of the study, the chairperson of the Dissertation Board will present at the Department of Studies supervisor candidates for the PhD students.

The Dissertation Board may, by the mediation of the head of the academic department, be able to approve two supervisors (co-advisors); One of the co-advisors may be a professor, associate professor, senior research personnel from other institution, if there is a contract / memorandum signed or joint doctorate between the GTU and other institution.

Scientific supervisors will present the PhD student’s Personal Work Plan within two weeks from the date of approval;

The Dissertation Council, in the beginning of the second semester, approves the Dissertation topic and title.

Preliminary defense of the thesis

PhD student must publish at least three scientific articles and take part in a scientific conference before the doctoral thesis is submitted to the Dissertation Board. The articles should reflect the main findings of the research performed by the candidate. Scientific articles should be published in the publications acknowledged by the Dissertation Board and the editorial-publishing board of the GTU, or in the field of scientific journals that are distributed internationally.

Preliminary defense of the thesis is held before committee of academic department. Main findings of research are to be presented. The doctoral student answers the questions asked by the academic staff. At the pre-defense doctorate can use any type of audio / visual material; Preliminary defense results are recorded in the protocol.

Thesis defense

Thesis defense is held publicly at the session of the Dissertation Board.

Defense will be conducted in English.

The PhD student, in the time provided for by the Rules of Procedure, clearly establishes the scientific innovation, the main provisions of the work, the results obtained and conclusions;

The doctoral student answers the questions of the board members and attendees, after which the appointed opponents present peer- review of the thesis.

At the defense doctorate can use any type of audio / visual material; After successful defense, the doctorate will be awarded the academic degree of the doctor and will be awarded the diploma.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees in Georgian Technical University is annual 6500 GEL for English language program (http://gtu.ge/Eng/international-students/tuitionfees.php).
