The program is aimed to develop sciences studying cities and metropolitan areas, management of transport urban flows, economically safe and healthy urban environment, its multilateral structure, accumulation of experiences, analytical maps and documentation.
In the conditions of rapid urbanization, the main goals of the program are: illuminating the factors to support ecological balance, development of safety for districts and population, investigation of new principles of urban factors connected with self-identification and life-style, studies of their functioning, interrelation; the development of methodological, educational, scientific works; implementation of new principles and strategies in city development, which are the most important in multi-lateral structure of urban nature.
The Program of sustainable urbanism aims to prepare a researcher. The program ensures doctoral student’s professional and intellectual growth as a specialist in civil matters / planner and urbanization and he will be able to develop common and professional skills according to internationally approved standards to solve the actual problems of modern City development.
The Doctoral Program aims to coordinate academic and research resources, activate scientific work and raise the quality of research, involve in international scientific space, create and implement new knowledge in this field.
Doctoral educational program for sustainable urban studies aims to prepare a specialist with high competencies, a scholar who will be able to publish and solve modern ecological, public and technical tasks in cities.
Georgian Technical University is actively participating in RETHINK (Reform of Education Thru International Knowledge exchange) Project financed by European Union TEMPUS Programme and coordinated by FAUL - Faculty of Architecture at Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal).
The project objective was to develop new PhD Program in Urbanism with Environmental Protection competences and with the possibility to be issued by Double Degree Diploma.
Herewith RETHINK Project aims at improving of education and science quality and its sustainable development, integration in EU area.
The curriculum development of the Doctorate Educational Program "Sustainable Urbanism" was structured based on the academic and methodological literature of the Faculty of Architecture of University of Lisbon, in close cooperation and consultation with Prof. Antonio Castelbranco and Oksana Turchanina.

Under the conditions of world urbanization, when 50 percent of the Earth's population - 3,5 billion people live in Cities, and are used 50 percent of energy resources - the pollution of urban environment - carbon output is 75%, the interest of world society has increased sharply towards cities’ development and according to the above mentioned emerged the demand of energetic comfort , by the citizens of the cities. Also has emerged the the requirement of energy comfort, assurance of life high quality, environmental protection from climate impact. This fact was observed and expressed in many international and world documents, including the United Nations Resolution 2015, where 17 goals and objectives of the sustainable development were laid out in the Habitat III, 2016 New Urban Agenda.
The Government of Georgia has officially recognized the country's Sustainable Development Strategy, which reflected the content of the Government's 4-point plan in 2016 with the following directions: spatial arrangement, public governance, social reform, and European reintegration of Georgia.
Sustainable urban development in the longer term of the cycle is associated with cyclical work, self-esteem and sharing processes. That is why the demand for Urbanists in labor market was grew up.
Urban studies, specialists and experts implementing these studies, on their training and retraining - these aspects are becoming more and more active on the development of teaching methodical literature.
The Doctoral Education Program has been developed for the unmatched nature of the cities and the need for the international market in terms of environmental quality assessment, considering modern approaches and views such as the theory of catastrophes and chaos, formalization of the quasi-rural structures of the city.
Also, in the context of European reintegration, the educational program compatibility with European universities was envisaged.
