The Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol method (SIOP) helps students develop, understand and use language at grade level. **Begin with one lesson, then build around a unit. Don't expect to "SIOP" your entire practice at first.

Provide authentic activities to teach background knowledge such as surveys, writing, making models and playing games. Make meaningful connections to lesson concepts using multimedia, graphic organizers, word walls, table talk, sentence starters, for students to discover and express their ideas. Use and repeat content vocabulary.

Practice talking, and “oral rehearsal” in order to show understanding. Support language and content objectives by using at least 2 different structures during a lesson—pairs, triads, teams, varied by language proficiency or interest. Consistently allow for wait time—let other students write down answers while waiting for other student to respond.

Provide lots of hands-on materials, have discuss and interact to make abstract concepts more concrete. Integrate all language skills into each lesson--listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Engage students in a way that they are active learners, "doing" rather than "watching or listening". Have them working in whole groups, small groups,or individually. Pace the lesson based on the students’ ability level..

Check in with students to see if their understanding is receptive or productive.Review content vocabulary and key concepts. Notice who gets it, who needs help. Use a variety of visual check ins, Fist to Five understanding, exit slips or visual goal charts for all grade levels of students. WE all benefit from a visual checklist to identify our goals and check off our accomplishments.
