Dictations

Give students a sentence to repeat slowly, and write exactly what they hear. Use sentences with blanks about familiar topics which they can fill in.

Create true/false statements, or introduce three truths and a lie game before the lesson. Then check predictions after the lesson and restate new understanding.

each time a student speaks they place down a chip
when they are out, others must use their chips before they can pick up and start again

Tips for teachers of Intermediate English Language Learners

Intermediate students are excited about language even though they might not show it.

They will begin to use frequent phrases and words in conversation, and start to understand without translating. They will generally speak in present tense with simple short grammatical phrases.

Focus on listening and speaking before reading and writing.
Use dictations to practice and show understanding of word sounds.
Use fill in the blanks with word banks and word walls for visual clues.
Allow students to use translators or dictionaries to support their efforts to communicate.
Use visual check-ins to see that they understand the content or message.
Ensure that Intermediates take on roles in the classroom. This will encourage community and responsibility.

Oral Strategies:

Use language stems or strategies like "Talking Chips", to encourage students to participate in small group activities.

Reading Strategies:

Try anticipation guides or close reading activities

Writing Strategies:

Do class or small group writes where each contributes, try journal writing, and writing for a purpose with themed word banks.
