There is no rush for assessment, wait a few weeks for beginners, and then utilize a English Language Proficiency Assessment.
Create an assessment binder for yourself or school. Pre and post assessments in addition to a minimum of two reports each year are mandatory.

- Ask them to point to a few simple objects.
- If they are able, then move to more difficult instructions. "Who..." "How much..."
- Ask for them to tell you their responses in addition to gestures.

- Find passages students relate to and topics they know.
- Try a billingual text and see if they can read in their own language.
- Look at letter identification, sounds, blends, fluency

- Have them write their first and last name.
- Ask them to try to write a simple sentence.
- Ask them to journal a few sentences based on a picture.
