Here is the job description for both the Cross Country and Track and Field Coach.
Expectations for Coaches
Cross country Meet- for boys and girls K-8th.
1st, 2nd, 3rd place medallions for winning placements, and participation ribbons for all students that finish the race. The flyer will be shared.
Athletic Permission slip completed and returned to coach. The form needs to be completed in order to compete in the race. No form, no race! Permission slips may be found on the home page of GESD Athletics website.
Name tags for each athlete need to be filled out by coaches. Name tags contain first and last name, school, gender, and grade. Name tags need to be filled out by coaches prior to the meet.
Distance- K- 2nd :quarter of mile, 3rd -5th grade: half a mile, 6th-8th grade: mile
Training through the 5 hour NFHS online course "Coaching Cross Country" is optional. Registration would be paid by the district.
Schedule
Please arrive at 8:00 am to warm up with your coach.
We will walk through the course before races so students know where they are running.
Race Order (Start times are tentative based on number of participants
The start: Each grade level race will not be staggered.
Finish Line: One finish line. As students cross the finish line they will take off their name tags and hand it to the person at the finish. At the end of the finish line they will not receive a ribbon. They will be distributed to coaches at the end of the week.
Spectators: Spectators must stay out of the way of runners and stay outside of the fence that surrounds the track. Spectators will not be permitted near the start or finish line. The designated race course will be sectioned off with cones and caution tape Spectators are strongly encouraged to support their son/daughter, and all other participants. Spectators will not be allowed to run with an athlete during the duration of the race. Coaches can run for a short distance with athletes to encourage, but are not permitted to run during the duration of the entire race. We will have a designated gate for parents to pick up their child.
Disqualifications: No physical contact allowed during race. Students will be disqualified if physical contact occurs. No ribbon will be given to a student if disqualification is administered.
Code of Conduct: Coaches are expected to enforce the GESD athletic contract. Athlete’s first responsibility is to be a Student, then an Athlete. Participating in athletics is a privilege and with that, comes certain responsibilities for Student Athletes. If a student has an in-school suspension Friday before the meet or is expected to have an in-school suspension the Monday after the meet, then he/she will not be allowed to participate in the cross country event on Saturday. Student athletes who receive an out of school suspension from school are ineligible to participate if the event occurs on the Saturday following a suspension. Suspended students are not permitted on GESD premises.
Paperwork: Athletic permission slip must be completed and turned in by (TBD) or at coach’s discretion. Paperwork will not be accepted the day of the meet on
Practices: Coaches must hold a minimum of four practices before the meet. We want to ensure that students are learning best practices so they do not injure themselves.
