Our class took some time to analyze the messages in song lyrics. Here are the four questions we were tasked to answer:
What message do the song lyrics convey?
What did you notice in the song as you listened? How did it make you feel?
What did you hear that makes you say that?
Do you think the song is effective in conveying its message? Why?
Here's our results!
This song talks about how everyone is a good person in some way. Everyone makes mistakes but that doesn't mean they are a bad person because of one mistake you made. In some people it is easier to see then others but deep down everyone has some good in them. It talks about how kids should stay kids as long as they can and not try to grow up too fast because once you grow up there is no going back. It says ¨ Turn off the screen, go climb a tree, get dirt on their hands.¨ this stood out to me because that is a problem today. Kids spend too much time on screens and they don't get outside enough. This song has a lot of meaning in it and I think everyone needs to realize the actual meaning behind this song and it doesn't just mean that every person is good it is also referring to everything in life that is good. The line ¨ I believe you love who you love ain't nothing you should ever be ashamed of.¨this is another line that also stood out to me because nowadays this is also an issue and some people feel ashamed of who they love and that isn't right everyone is free to love who they want and no one should tell them who they can and can't love. Another part that I noticed was when it said ¨ I believe that days go slow and years go fast¨ I can relate to this because during the day it feels like the day will go on forever and it will never end but then before you know it the year is over and it felt so short. We don't pay attention to stuff until it is already behind us. The song also talks about how every breath we take the first breath to the last and that is important and we shouldn't take that for granted because you never know what is going to happen.
I'm not pretty
Written by Jessika Harling
Sang by Jessia Islam
Released Sep.10,2010
The song ”I'm Not Pretty” was written by Jessika Harling and sang by Jessia Islam. This song is really inspiring and just makes you feel good about yourself when listening to it. It's about body positivity and body image. It puts off a good picture for younger girls to not care what others think and there is always going to be someone ”prettier” than you so you should just live life to the fullest. In the song she puts a swear word in it, I think she put that in there because sometimes people don't really listen to what the words say but when they hear something that isn't right it makes them think a little more. One thing that is a big problem in body image is weight, some girls even starve themselves. In the song she says “but I can't find the way to lose weight without literally starving” and this is very important to know because weight loss can cause eating disorders and lots of other bad habits. Another thing she said in her song was “i wish my body image didn't say I should be another kinda way” our world has put up a “picture” of how woman should look, over the years it has gotten alot better but its still not perfect, so when she said that in the song it really made me think about how the world puts a lot of pressure on us girls. All around this song is portraying a good picture about body positivity and why we should stop caring what others think and just love ourselves.
Born This Way
By: Lady Gaga Written By: Fernando Garibay Released in: 2011
The song “Born This Way” is sung by Lady Gaga. It is written by Fernando Garibay and was released in 2011. This song is about loving everyone for who they are. It's a very good message, It's talking about how no matter what race, sexuality, or religion a person is we should love them because everyone is perfect in their own way The one lyric that I really like and gives a good message is “No matter gay, straight, or bi, lesbian, transgendered life, I'm on the right track baby” this line is saying that no matter what you are or who you love you are still loved and are appreciated. And that we should not judge people for who they love or what they identify as. I really liked this line because a lot of people around here do not support lgtbqa+ so im so used to hearing about how it's wrong and that if you are part of the lgtbqa+ you will go straight to h*ll which is not true. I’m so sick of hearing people say “Oh that”s so gay” and using it as and insult because its not. I love this song because it proves that not everyone in this world is bad. This song gives a very good message and the writer did a very good job at telling that message. It was so well written so it is so good and I love what this song talks about. People need to start realizing that when people are part of the lgtbqa+ community they are not a sin and they are just humans.
Scars to Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara
The song I chose is Scars to Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara. It was released in 2015. The message in this song is about body shaming. Body shaming is not fun. Lots of gymnasts go through body shaming.
She hurts herself because she has no self esteem. She feels like she is ugly, she doesn’t realize her beauty within. Some people think they are overweight. She wants to be beautiful. She thinks the cover girls have it easy and get everything handed to them. She isn’t happy with how she looks. She starves herself to be skinny and that's not good cause she will get a bad eating disorder. She has depression. She feels sad that she is not beautiful. She should see how beautiful she is. She should start being happy, and I hope she finds her beauty. Don’t forget everyone is beautiful.
If You Want Love by NF
In the song I think the song was Nathan’s way of telling us love isn't just a walk in the park, you're going to have to make sacrifices and learn to change in order to capture it and keep it. I think the way NF wrote the song had meaning because of the way not only it sounds but the way it told a story in my head, I think of Nate’s songs as stories told by elders because when he sings I listen to every word with passion and meaning. This song is one of my favourites by NF because i think it has the most meaning and it’s not just another song that has no purpose but as a lesson to teach others and yourself about love and trust. My favourite line in the song is ‘’ if you want love you gon have to go through the pain, if you want love you gon have to learn how to change, if you want trust you gon have to give some away’’ because it tells the biggest story throughout the entire song.
American Bad Dream
Kane Brown
Kane Brown, Chase McGill, Josh Hoge
2018
The song I picked was American bad dream. It really stood out to me because he talked about him having a bad dream. He is trying to get out of the bad dream and he was skipping school in ninth grade. The lyrics that stuck out to me was that he was saying he was skipping school to try and get out of the dream. I think he really told us the message in the song and conerd the things he need to cover. When he walked into class he was wearing a disguise and everybody was falling for it. I think the message in the song was try to get out of the bad dreams you have and try to forget them. Don't worry about the dream just go on with your day and forget about it. When i listened to the song i really got the message of the song and it stuck out to me. I really like the song it really stuck at me it was the way he was singing the song it stuck out at me
One Love By Bob Marley
“One Love” is a song written by Bob Marley back in 1994. He made this song to bring up anti-racism and address it as it should be. This song is a very bold and strong hearted message. I encourage anyone who wants to listen to it to listen to it for learning purposes or even just for fun. While I listened to this song for the first time I couldn’t really pick out the message but after listening to it a couple more times I am pretty sure that I have a good understanding of it. After a bit I noticed that it wasn’t what he said it’s how he said it that made me feel encouraged to do something or say something. This song “One Love” seems to really convey that racism only started to be a thing to say that people are different, which they are but they’re also very close to the same. A quote that really struck me hard was “As it was in the beginning” Which I took as people were all the same, at the beginning of humanity and the beginning of civilization.
Luke Bryan “Most People are Good”
The message of this song is to have empathy for people, and not to judge them before you have walked a day in their shoes. There are still good people left in the world and not everybody is bad. We should all work for what we have and you should never be ashamed of what you have or show off what you have. We need to stop caring about having screens, or the best phone and just go outside, make connections with other people, and play, have fun and care about the bigger picture in life You can love whoever you want to and you don't have to be the same skin colour or anything like that if you love them you can love them and nobody should judge you for it. We need to forgive and make amends with people that we haven't had such a good history with. You should not worry about what anybody else says just go and live your life.
Against the Wind by: Bob Seger
released in: April 1980.
Have you ever listened to against the wind by bob seger? I recommend listening to this song, it's pretty unique. “Against the wind” I think that means when everything goes against you in life you never ever give up on it, just keep going harder. And when it says “i found myself alone surrounded by strangers i thought were my friends” i think that means he’s feeling alone and he is single and everyone is against him, but he thought he had friends but they don’t actually like him. “I was living to run and running to live” that means that like he is always busy and he never has time to do anything else.
“Never worried about pain or even how much I owed” he’s saying that he is not worried about something like that like he has bigger issues. “Searching for shelter again and again” he’s trying to find shelter because he can’t afford anything. “I've got so much more to think about deadlines and commitments” that means that he’s got to worry about completing stuff on time, but doesnt have enough time to, and he said commitments which i think means that like when you commit to do something but he’s got bigger stuff to worry about so it is so hard to do that stuff. And he is saying how much he wants to be a kid again, because he is about to die and because he wishes that he didn’t have to pay bills or anything else like tax and car payments and a house.
Born This Way by Lady Gaga made in 2011
This song is talking about, people judge other people's sexuality. It's telling us how we can be who we want to be, not what others want us to be.
The lyrics in the song are changing. What I mean by changing is, if you want to be bi, lesbian, gay, trans, etc. You can do it, you can’t let people choose who you want to be. It’s your body, your sexuality, you are you, you can't let others tell you they want you to be. If they don't support your decisions then they have to deal with it. If it's what makes you happy, then do it. So many people judge others by their sexuality, or how they look and act. I think this song is trying to state that you can be whatever you want, and you don't have to be scared to be yourself around others. You may be a guy or girl on the outside but on the inside, you can someone else.
So many people judge and hurt others just because they’re a part of the LGNTQ+ community. People have made videos and wrote hurtful things about other people for their sex or the color of their skin. Over the years, people have judged or made fun of people for who the person wants to be. If it makes the person happy and makes them feel proud, then let them do it and don't bring them down and hurt them. The song “born this way” by Lada Gaga, makes people think and it gives them a boost and helps them make that change for themself. It's trying to say is you don’t have to hide who you want to be. If it's what you want, then you go get it and don't let people bring you down and judge you for you.
One of the lyrics that I heard most of the song was “I was born this way, don't hide in regret” and I like this lyric because it's saying you may have been born in a different body or sex but you can be the opposite. You don't have to hide who you want to be, be proud and show everyone who you are.
The song has a very good meaning and this song can boost someone's life and let them make that change. You don't have to hide who you are. People don't need to be judging others just by who they are, maybe get to know them a little bit first and judge them by their personality and if they’re a good person or not. This song has a very powerful message and could change someone's life.
Most People are Good by Luke Bryan, the songwriter is Josh Kear and was released in 2017
The message of this song is to just live life to the fullest and be the best you, you can be. In the song it said “I believe most people are good.” The more it said those words the more I realized most of the people I know are good, and that makes me want to be good. “I believe that youth is spent well on the young, cause wisdom in your teens would be a lot less fun.” I think it would be a lot less fun because your teen years are meant to make mistakes and learn from. “I believe you love who you love ain't nothing you should be ashamed of.” I believe this because you should be able to love anyone you want and not get made fun of. “I believe most Friday nights look better under neon or stadium lights.” Everyone needs a break from work or school so why not spend it doing something you love. I do think this song is effective in conveying the message because it's saying you should just live in the moment and don't worry about the future.
This song is like when one kid gets in trouble and the whole class has to sit there and listen. When me and my family go on a road trip, we listen to Luke Bryan songs. “Most People Are Good” is sung by Luke Bryan and written by Josh Kear. It was released at the end of 2017. These are the lines that pop out to me the most “I believe kids oughta stay out of trouble” That is saying that the world isn't always the best. “Ain't nothing you should ever be ashamed of I believe this world ain't half as bad as it looks'' it means you shouldnt be ashamed of what someone else that other people say. Don't think what other people say or what you look like or how you look on the outside. Luke Bryan repeated Most people are good, everyone in the world is good. It's the choices you make. This song makes me happy when I listen to it and brings me to happiness when i'm sad . Luke Bryan believes in who he loves and he is trying to tell us. To believe who we love and not what someone else thinks.Yes I think it is effective in conveying because it really tells you the message in the song.It repeats the lyrics so you get a good understanding of what it is trying to say.
Imagine everyone is bad and no good people, and that would suck. I think that everyone needs to work for what they want. Be happy who you are and respect yourself. I like when he says this every breath is a gift, I like this because it’s true everyone is lucky to be alive. ¨Turn off the screen, go climb a tree get dirt on your hands¨I to think this means you don’t stay a kid forever enjoy being a kid enjoy the moment. ¨Believe in working hard for what you got”. If you want something you got to work hard for it, that is a big part of life. If you don’t work hard in life you will hard for the rest of your life and that would suck. Even if it doesn’t add up to a hell of a lot. The reason why he said this is to be grateful for what you have because not all people have as much as you so be happy with what you have. ¨I believe them streets of gold¨ The reason why he said that is because people for years to build this road. It’s not easy to build these roads. One of the things that are a big part of the story in the song is everyone has to work to get what they want in life, that ¨ why most people are good¨. The world isn’t as bad as it looks there are good things in this world. ¨Believe that days go slow And years go fast And every breath is a gift, Another thing is to appreciate that you are alive.
The Song is called: man in the mirror
The artist of this song is: michael jackson
The year song was published is: 1987
Imagine you were on a road trip and you love to listen to michel jackson .This song is about making a change and realizing that it has to start with you. This song is called man in the mirror. You may not be able to make a difference in the whole world but you can make it on yourself. I also think that if one thing bad happens don't let it affect you . One message that stuck out to me is “I'm starting with the main in the mirror”. THat sticks out to me because he's not going to start and help anyone yet he is going to start with himself and try to fix his own problems. Another sentence I thought was good is.“Want to make the world a better place”.This means he wants this world to be the best place it can be and he's willing to do anything to do that. I Think this song sends out a good message because it shows that you have to make a difference in yourself before you can go and try to make a difference in the world and others around you.Again this song is called the man in the mirror. you can make a difference in the world but you can make a bigger one for yourself. By being the the best person you can be
Imagine By John Lennon (1971)
Imagine you could change the world in 1 second. What would you change? John Lennon wrote “Imagine” to tell the world what he thought. This song was written in 1971 (49 years ago) and the world is still facing similar problems. One lyric that stood out to me was “No need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of a man.” There are people on the street who have to beg for money and food and we think of them as less than us and we judge them. Instead we should be helping the people in need. Another example is “Imagine there’s no heaven, it’s easy if you try.” As humans we get scared of the future and/or the past, but we should be trying to live in the present. We should enjoy what is happening right now, not worry about what is to come or regret something we did in the past. I also liked the last lyrics of the song “I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one.” These lyrics show that we shouldn’t judge people because of how they look, worry about things that aren’t happening now, or judge people because of their religion, instead we should treat everyone equally, and live in the present time. So, what would you change? John Lennon wanted to make people realize that we aren’t perfect, and I think he did a good job at getting his point across.
I'm Not Racist by Joyner Lucas
Song not posted because it includes some inappropriate language.
“I’m Not Racist”, by Joyner Lucas is such a powerful song. The song starts out with a “white man” saying that he has no respect for black people, because “all the black guys would rather be deadbeats than pay their bills. Right off the jump the song grabs people's attention. You can instantly tell that this song is going to be controversial to everyone listening. This song talks about a lot of things that us people are scared, or afraid to talk about. It talks about stereotypes, slavery, the colour of our skin, ect. It goes from a “white man” telling the white side of the story, and then goes to the black side of the story. This song uses really good analogies, like “it's like we are in the same building but split into two floors, and it's like we are in the same building but split into both sides.” in the song it says, “you would rather be lazy as f***, and sell drugs then get a job and be straight”, from the white guys perspective. The white guy is stereotyping, and he doesn't know what the other guy had to go through to do that. This song also talks about how white, and black people think about themselves and each other. “I'm not racist, my sister's boyfriend's black”. During the end of each of their verses, they say how they wish that they knew what they were going through, and wish that they could fit in each other's shoes. “There's two sides to every story, and I wish that I knew yours”. The black side of the story says that the country is always judging them by their skin colour, and they can't even drive without cops starting a fight. “I hate you, but i love you at the same time”. That line really stuck out to me, because it shows that we can love each other, but we are both making it difficult for each other. At the end of the song it says, “can't erase a scar with a bandage, I'm hoping we can come to an understanding, agree to disagree, we can come to an understanding”. I think that ended the song off well with a positive message.
Unanswered Prayers, 1990
Sung by: Garth Brooks
Written by: Pat Alger, Larry Bastian and Garth Brooks
Do you think everything happens for a reason? Have you ever tried super hard to make a hockey team or a baseball team but you didn't make it? But then something else popped up and it was even better or helped you become a better athlete than anticipated!
If you dont think everything happens for a reason, maybe read this write up or listen to the actual song, it might just change your mind!
My family and I love Garth, we listen to his channel during long car rides or cleaning the house. I recommend listening to this song and really focusing on the lyrics. Some lyrics that really stuck out were “Each night i’d spend pray’in that god would make her mine” so when he was younger he really wanted this girl and he prayed and prayed that god would make her his. “I'd never ask for anything else again’ if he got this girl he would never ask/pray again, he would do anything just to get this one girl.” “Some of god's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers” This really just means that it was supposed to happen and everything happens for a reason. “That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care”This means that he actuall y does care, he just knows that something better will happen to you and you'll be happier with what you will get instead of what you originally wanted.
Moral of the story is everything happens for a reason and if god doesn't answer your prayer it's not because “he dont care”, it's because he knows what's best.
Female
Written/sung by Keith Urban
Released in 2018.
The song “Female” by Keith Urban conveys a message about treating women equal to men. Women are known as “lower” or not as important as men, they are known for being kind of like “2nd place”. And in the song I found parts that show examples of how women are very important, and parts that show women being put down for what they are wearing or simply just being a woman. The very first line of the song says “when you hear somebody say somebody hits like a girl” and that line stood out to me because it is very commonly used now and always was a very common “insult”. And the fact that people think of it as an insult needs to be changed because there are so many women in this world that could very easily take down anyone if she wanted to, and in my opinion no one should be assuming things like that about anyone based on their gender. Another line that stood out to me was talking about how “she asked for it just because she was wearing a skirt” and that's another very commonly talked about “issue” around this topic and it really does suck that women have to so careful about wearing just the right thing because if they dress too comfortable then they are considered lazy but if they show too much skin then they are considered *bad names*. I really like the message this song is sending and it's just overall a really good song. :)
After The Storm Blows Through
Maddie and Tae
Released in the year, 2015
Do you have a bestfriend that you would do anything for? “After The Storm Blows Through” by Maddie and Tae It is a song about being there for each other through tough times and no matter what they promise they will help each other out. They convey this message by comparing it to a storm, “you’ve been walking around with a dark cloud hanging over every step you take.” means they haven't really been in the right state of mind lately and they've been really down “I'll face the wind by your side, even take on the rain, I don't mind” means that no matter what's going on they will be willing to do anything for eachother. This song really makes me feel like i need to go out and help someone who has been struggling a lot lately and it motivates me to feel my best all the time. I think that this song gives out the message that if you need help to just ask and you will receive. I also think that this song also motivates lots of people to recognise that not everyone is okay and some people need someone to talk to and they did a very good job conveying that in the song. I really like this song and definitely recommend listening to it, Maddie and Tae are very talented and have unbelievable voices. They deserve way more attention than they have because they are amazing people and super talented singers/musicians.
The Bullet by Carrie Underwood
Published in 2018
Imagine you are standing right infront of a shooting scene this is how Carrie underwood felt while making this song, it is called “The Bullet” This song stood out to me because, this song was obviously written in the U.S and in the U.S they dont have very strict rules with guns so they can just be walking down the street and carrying a gun so the message is how one bullet can kill a loved one but wound the whole family. So Carrie Underwood is trying to bring recognition to the U.S that they should not be able to carry guns around. I think Carrie Underwood picked this song title beacuse The “bullet” hits one and takes down everyone with it. The couple lines that stood out to me was “The grass grows back around the stone and friends stop checkin in on the phone the camera crews have all moved on but the wounds still open.” These Lines stuck out to me because eventually they try and push down the pain but you cant you have to let it all out. I also like this line “ You can blame it on hate or blame it on guns” I like this line cause you will never feel better if you blame it on someone you just have to live with the trauma. I have never heard this song before and now it is probably my favourite song. I recommend this song to listen to if you're feeling a bit sad.
Fight the Power by Public Enemy
There were three people who wrote fight the power there names are Chuck D, Eric Sander, and Keith Shocklee
I think everybody should be treated the same way in the world and It doesn't matter there skin tone, religion , race or culture. I think there should be only one race and that's the human race. Public enemy says in their song “our freedom of speech is freedom or death.” They are talking about black people's rights. When they repeat and repeat fight the power they are referring to the government and the police because they have the power. Public enemy mention 1989 the number another summer (get down).” They are referring to the student protest in China in 1989. Fight The power official music video was filmed in the streets with some people protesting with signs saying fight the power.
Lost Boy by Ruth B.
Do you like the song Little Do You Know by Alex & Sierra or Say Something by A Great Big World? If you do you also might like the song “Lost Boy by Ruth B ”if you don’t already like it. “Lost Boy” by Ruth. B was released in January of 2015. It's kind of like a story of someone with depression who ends up going down the wrong path dissociating from reality, not getting help and now can't tell her fake world from reality. When she says “neverland i love you so you are now my home sweet home forever a lost boy at last and for always i will say” she's saying that neverland is her home forever. it could also be in this line “nowhere to go and no place to call home” she feels like she can call it home when she doesn't have one she feels comfortable in. Neverland is a place she most likely made up, dissociating herself from her troubles so take the line “always on the run from captain hook” and “Run run lost boy, they say to me” who's telling her to run from her enemy but herself. she's telling herself to run away from her problems instead of fixing them.
I noticed that she's saying “lost boys like me are free” which means there are more people like her who make up new realities to go to when they feel like they need to which could be when they're sad, mad, scared, nervous, etc. And don’t get the help they need
“Same Love”, written and sang by Mary Lambert, Ryan Lewis and Macklemore, released in 2012
Have you ever wanted to listen to a song about equality, sexuality, race, gender, religion and stereotypes, then the song “Same Love” is the song for you, and so is this report,.. My top three favorite lines have to be “But we paraphrase a book written 3,500 years ago” , “The right-wing conservatives think it’s a decision, and you can be cured with some treatment and religion “ , “It’s human rights for everybody, There is no difference”. I especially enjoy the one about human rights because people talk about that ya we have human rights except people want to make abortion illegal because of their religion even though some other people may not neccarsily believe the same thing, and not everyone has to believe the same thing. That sort of ties into the other two and the fact that people think that you have to believe in the same thing but you don’t, not only that but the one about being apart of the LGBTQ+ community is a choice and that it can be so called “cured” when it’s not a decision and it’s just who the person is. The line that talk about how we are all expected to live by a book written 3,500 years ago is also very meaningful because sometimes people who live by the bible wants everyone else to live by the bible when we are aloud to believe what want and we should all be seen as equals and not have to believe in the same thing in order to live in peace . In fact we shouldn’t have to be the same in any shape or form in order to live in a functioning, working, peaceful civilization.
Black or White sung by Michael Jackson, and written by Bill Bottrell in November 1991
This song is about how it doesn't matter what skin colour your skin is, it matters who you love and how you feel for them. It also talks about how the world is sick of racism and how you can love anyone even without the same skin colour. Micheal referred to racism as a turf war on a global scale, and how gangs, clubs, nations cause grief in human relationships. Another part of the song tells people to hear both sides of the story before making an overall decision. We have the “it's not about races it's about faces and places” I think that means it doesn't matter what they look like it's about where they came from and the first impression they make. He also says he isn’t scared of her family or anybody he just wants to be with her. In the last bit of the song he says wherever your blood comes is where your space is. Which i think means wherever you came from effects the kind of person you are and the things you do.
“Guns for hands” by Twenty one pilots, Released 2011.
Guns for hands is about suicide, the first part is talking about how people dont understand that there is people who have these mentle problems and conditions. This song stuck out to me because he says in the start of the song “When the sun shines on the ground and it shows where your mind has gone And you swear to your parents that it will never happen again” I think it is talking about after a night of cutting and lying that they will never do it again.
This first part is trying to explain to people who don't suffer that there are people that do need help.
“I simply tell them they should shoot at this Simply suggest my chest and this confused music, it's Obviously best for them to turn their guns to a fist” he wants them to turn their “guns” into fist to fight the depression.
This makes me feel bad for these people and think that more people should be spreading awareness about depression and suicide.
I think this song needs to be HEARD more to be an effective message spreader.
~Fight The Power: By Public Enemy~
Released as a single in the summer of 1989 on motown records, it was also ranked the number one single of 1989. In 2001 the song was ranked 288th in the songs of the century list. I think the message of supporting black people and defending victims of racism is great for its time, although catchy and such, it's quite controversial, probably a lot to throw around and take out of an upbeat hip hop song considering that rap and hip hop are normally just associated with money guns etc. I do think the song did justice to black people especially considering the date age/ year, along with it wasn’t released very long after black people had gotten their rights and equal protection ( so called equality ) it wasn't very equal though not many people exactly wanted to support them still. They still tried to refuse business, eventually though everyone was forced to obey by the new laws. It took a while for them to actually get their rights despite it already being a law. Overall I think it was a good decision to follow through with making and publishing the song, despite risking repercussions bringing awareness to what they have to deal with everyday of their life.
