I Am Canadian
The grade 7s and 8s are working on a social studies unit all about Canadian Identity. Each student chose a symbol of Canada and then created a stanza for our class poem entitled "I am Canadian".
“I am Canadian”
by Grade 7/8
I am the Canadian flag
You hear me flying in the wind,
representing our country
I’m the RCMP
I protect our country
I make people feel safe
When I’m on duty
I am poutine
My gravy is smooth on your tongue,
my cheese is really stringy
I am really delicious
I am lacrosse,
the national sport of Canada.
Are you gonna watch us play,
Or are you gonna join the game?
I am a pine tree,
I stand tall on the coldest days,
My pines keep me warm,
I am a pine tree
I am the Calgary Tower,
tall and clear.
You might be able to see the Rockies
from up here.
I am the Toronto Raptors,
The grips on the basketball
Grab onto your hand.
I am a holder of the Stanley Cup.
It’s been passed around for 128 years,
from winner to winner,
for a very long time.
I am a beaver.
You can see me in a
lake, creek, or river.
I am one of the
Seven Sacred Teachings.
I am getting Tim Hortons no matter the weather,
Talking laughing, dining all together
I am a polar bear,
silky and warm,
stocky and short
I roam the Arctic’s
coastlines and islands
I am a frozen piece of rubber,
Spiraling
down a freshly glazed slab of ice
I am a sweet bottle of maple syrup,
to spread on pancakes in the morning.
I come from a maple tree and
a tap is where I start pouring
I am the hours outside,
building our annual igloo.
Playing every day,
until the snow starts to melt.
I am the bison
that once roamed
the grasslands and ran free.
I am a curling rock
I glide in small circles down the ice
I BOOM into the oppositions rock
knocking it out of the house
I am a moose,
I am big and strong,
You see me in the woods
as I live my life.
I am a Canadian butter tart
made by a pioneer eaten fresh with a meal,
at dinner time as a sweet treat
I am the cornus canadensis
The Bushberry
I am the national flower of Canada
I am pearly white,
I won the national flower position
I am strong
I am “O Canada”
But more than this
Above all this
I am Canadian and proud to be FREE!
