National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
On Tuesday, we focused on learning about the history of Residential Schools in Canada. I led the students through a presentation that I put together with videos, read alouds and activities. We focused on the impact of not being connected to your community/culture and how a feeling of belonging/love/connection with others is a basic need for everyone. To showcase the unique cultural traits of the various Indigenous groups across Canada, we looked at examples of artwork from the West Coast, the praries, Lake Superior region, the East Coast and the Arctic. We finished off the day by creating a Norval Morriseau inspired Thunderbird. As a school, we participated in a Sit Spot and a Scream and Run activity. It was a fantastic day!
