Over the past two weeks we:
focused our read alouds on making mental pictures when we are reading and paying attention to character traits as we get to know the characters in the books we've read.
learned about the beginning and middle of personal narrative writing.
beginnings include the who, what, where and when
middles are the heart of the story and often use temporal words (first, then, next, all of a sudden, finally) to help organize the sequence of events
worked through all but the very last kite string letters in handwriting. Once we finish the p, we will be on to the loops letters!
completed our writing screeners
Over the past two weeks we:
completed the provincial math screener
learned how to use Touch Math for subtraction up to the number 8
mastered the take away 9 strategy
started our place value unit
were introduced to How Many Ways...an absolutely amazing number sense activity!
Over the past two weeks we:
learned about changing states of matter. We learned about melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation due to the impact of heat or cold
completed a jello experiment to see water in all three states
created our own water cycles in ziploc bags
The students really enjoyed the live presentation from Terry Fox's niece today!
They were completely silent and focused on her message...Terry Fox was just a normal kid that grew up to do great things!
I love how the whole Devon Black Gold Schools community comes together for the Terry Fox Walk each year! It's great to walk along with colleagues, past students and for the last year, my own son.
Photo Dump! Let's catch you up!
Ice Cream Float Experiment
The students practiced making different patterns within a given space before applying it to their final pieces.
The kids LOVED this song!
Students earn Silent 30 points by achieving smooth transitions. When we are changing from one activity to the next, I will say, "Please put your chromebooks away and get out your whiteboards. Give me a Silent 30." This means that the students have 30 seconds to quietly get themselves ready for the next activity. If we are successful, the students earn a point. After earning 30 points, they earn 30 minutes of free time.
We start each day with some type of morning conversation, sometimes as a whole class and sometimes in pairs or small groups. Each day has a different theme.

Ms. Cassandra is working through the Emotions Aquarium program with us on Thursdays. The students created these octopus breathing buddies to help them self-regulate when they are struggling with some strong emotions.
