Following Confederation (7.2) Lessons and Projects

Uprisings in the West Students will demonstrate their understanding about the events and results of the Red River Resistance of 1869 and the 2nd MĂ©tis uprising of 1885 by creating an interactive iconing lecture and Historica Minute that reflects the experiences and perceived reactions of individuals who played a key role in these conflicts. Riel on Trial 7.2.4

Students will research the factors led to Louis Riel's emergence as the leader of the MĂ©tis and the causes of the Red River Resistance of 1869 and 1885, then analyze the government of Canada's response.

With their research complete, students will then write an editorial in a magazine that examines how he was treated by the government of the time and how he is perceived now.

Louis Riel & Metis Uprisings 7.2.4

Students use a variety of media to understand the role, contributions and influence of the Red River Metis on the develpment of western Canada.

First, students explore how Louis Riel became the leader of the Metis people. They watch "Did you Know? - The History of Louis Riel" and use the textbook, "Our Canada: Origins, Peoples, Perspectives" to form and write about the government's treatment of Louis Riel.

Students create an Adobe Spark video to explain how Louis Riel became the leader of the Metis people. They use their Textbook and research for the content of their videos. 7.2.4.1

Louis Riel & Metis Uprisings 7.2.4

Students compare the causes of the Red River Resistance to the Second Metis Uprising. Divide the class to create two different Adobe Spark Videos. Work in pairs to compare the causes of each conflict using a Venn diagram. Then finish their individual videos adding the main similarities and differences as well as the government's response.

Louis Riel & Metis Uprisings

Students use "Our Canada: origins, Peoples, Perspectives" and Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then to represent the different perspectives of the Metis, First Nations, French and British people to explain how the creation of Manitoba was an attempt to achieve compromise. Students use Mclean's Magazine Template to further explain these perspectives.

Students use this Canada Library and Archives site and this site from CP rail to find information about the railroad and fill in the infographic and brochure. Do both sites tell the story in the same way? Has the government done enough to correct the wrongs of the past?
