The goal of screening is to assess student readiness for grade level learning.
It is essential to administer screening tools as early in a course as possible. This provides the opportunity for teachers to make responsive, evidenced informed instructional decisions to build on what students know and can do.
School based Instructional Support Teachers (ISTs) for Literacy, Numeracy, and French Immersion will work closely with the Division Instructional Coaches to support the cycle of screening tool administration, data analysis, resources to identify specific learning needs, and explore instructional strategies to accelerate learning.
Use screening tools to identify readiness for new learning at grade level.
Find out exactly what the student knows and can do and what support they may require.
Focus instruction on accelerating learning from the level students are at.
Instruction
is based on data collected and can be used to inform whether individual, small group, or full class remediation is needed.
must be intentionally planned and student centered (not show and tell).
can be provided at the beginning of the course or during a specific unit.
Remember, the goal is to enable students to move forward with grade level learning. Care must be taken to ensure that remedial instruction supports new learning and does not replace it.
Identify the learning target, model the learning, check for understanding, retell with closure.
Include guided practice and reteach discipline specific vocabulary.
Make connections between remedial learning and grade level learning so students see the purpose behind the instruction.
If a student is unable to work on grade level outcomes for the majority of the course, teachers will work with the LST to develop an appropriate plan.
Screening tools are not high stakes tests nor are they reflective of any teacher’s instructional practice. Some students may perceive screening tools as a high stakes assessment which can be a source of anxiety. Use student friendly language linked to the purpose of the screening tool to help manage student stress.
“Today we’re going to complete a writing/math/reading activity. Not only will this help me get to know you better, it will allow me to get a better sense of what you already know and can do."
“This isn’t for marks but it will help me learn more about what you already know and can do. That way, when assignments that count for marks do come, you’ll be better prepared. I want you to learn and do well! Everything we do in class counts, not everything is counted.”
