As a grade 4-12 teacher, you likely have a wide range of reading abilities in your class. Regardless of subject, student reading ability is a key factor in learning and all teachers have a role in developing student reading skills. Research shows that learning to read and reading to learn occur simultaneously throughout the grades. We will explore research on how students learn to read and harness the power of collaboration to develop and share effective reading comprehension strategies.
As the end of the year approaches, we are planning for review with our students. Effective review is a critical component of the mathematics classroom, as it helps students consolidate and reinforce their understanding of key concepts and skills. However, not all reviews are created equal, and we need to be intentional in our approach to ensure that reviews are engaging, effective, and aligned with learning goals.
Share and explore different review strategies, while critically reflecting upon whether they are meaningful, engaging, and rigorous. Ultimately do they help students build their mathematical fluency and problem-solving skills, and lead to greater student success?
Through the lens of research and collaboration, explore the difference between ability and motivation and how one, the other or both can affect students’ success in mathematics. It can often be hard to determine which is affecting students' success and how to help students overcome that barrier. We will provide some classroom strategies and ideas as well as time for collaboration to help teachers do just that.

Effective phonics instruction is essential when teaching emergent readers and writers. Teaching letter sounds, letter groupings and syllables can be confusing. We will help clarify this by looking at all of the syllable types, working through examples for each and discussing the reasons why it is important to teach them. Splitting words into syllables helps students break them into more manageable pieces and is a skill that can be used with any literacy program to help students become better readers and writers.
