Gender equality refers to equal treatment of individuals regardless of their gender.
It has surprisingly changed over the past 100 years.
At first, girls were just treated more like maids, or the person that looked after the house. They could not have a proper education. Only a few were taught (mostly the rich). They had to stay home and help with chores. Their form of education was learning how to maintain the house, do daily chores, weaving and mending clothes, taking care of infants and children, etc..... In most places they were excluded from public and social activities like taking part in politics, getting an education, owning land, and holding a certain profession.
This simple inequality shows that people in the olden days did not believe that women should have the same rights as men should.
People today may wonder why women were not included in a lot of stuff. This was mostly due to the fact that historically women were inferior than men when represented in religion and tradition. People thought that men were far superior than women as they believed that men were a lot stronger, smarter, tougher than women in almost all things.
Men and boys were always treated as the head of the household and/or family. They were the ones that made all of the choices. They could go to school and they did most of the official work like public activities like taking part in politics. If there was a election, men had the chance to go vote for laws and people and voice out their opinions. They could also run for a specific post in the government. Women didn't get to have a vote until the early 1900s.
In present day, we are all more able to embrace our differences in gender. This was all possible because of the Women's Rights Movement in the mid 1800s. Women and some men gathered together coming to an agreement that girls deserve the same rights as men do-no more, no less. Women got to vote nearly a century later and ever since then, people have been building steps to reach their goal: everyone deserves their own rights. No one's life is determined by their gender.
Now girls have much more freedom and many more rights than they used to. They can pursue an education, work for a job they like, own possessions, vote, roam freely, etc..... Most importantly, they can now openly participate in events and a lot of other stuff that they want to do. It still isn't a perfect world for girls because of some places do not like the concept of 'Women's rights', but in the end, the world is a much better place for females now.
Gender Equality is now on it's way to getting better. Efforts all around the world are being made to even things out.
