Song of the Wanderer 遊子吟

About the author:

His name is Meng Jiao (孟郊), who is a Chinese poet. When he was young, he lived in the mountains and didn’t have much contact with others. He’s an honest person. His poems usually are about his own poor lives and uneven mind.

Our Feelings:

The poem is to describe how great mothers are from the wanderers’ point of view. A mother’s love is totally natural without hesitation and complaint. I’m touched by reading this poem. I think of my mom and think about how great she is. I must study hard, love her, and care about her. I think Meng Jiao used this poem to let the readers know how important the love is between mothers and children.

The Quiet Night Thoughts

床前明月光 (I see a silver moonlight in front of my bed.)

疑是地上霜 (Like frost on the floor.)

舉頭望明月 (Look up! The bright moon I'm staring)

低頭思故鄉 (Look down! The home I'm missing.)

About the author:

Li Bai (李白), a.k.a “The Fairy of Poem”, is a Chinese poet. His name is usually brought up along with Du Fu, combining their first names as “Li Du”. Both of them are the two greatest poets in China's literary history. We still read many of his poems today. They are very classic. Li Bai’s poems are unique, natural, romantic, or I can say “Full of magic and wisdom”. He likes to use exaggerated and unrestrained ways to describe his feelings in mind.

Our Feelings:

In “The Quiet Night Thoughts”, a person sat and found out the moonlight shining in the bedroom, which is like frost on the ground. I think he described the loneliness in people’s heart. Maybe he’s missing a certain period of time, or a story, or someone. You can feel it just by reading this poem.

憫農詩

Sympathy for the Peasants

鋤禾日當午 (Hoeing in the paddy under the mid-day sun.)

汗滴禾下土 (Sweat dripping to the soil underneath the plant.)

誰知盤中飧 (Who knows that the meals in our plates,)

粒粒皆辛苦 (Every morsel of them comes with toil and pain.)

About the author:

Li Shen (李紳) was a well-known poet in the Tang Dynasty in China. He had a rough life, and his father passed away when he still young. Later he followed his mom and studied. At that time, he saw that the peasants worked so hard every day and night, but still lived a life without enough food and clothes in the end, which makes him extremely sad and indignant. Because of his sympathy and kind heart, he wrote some famous poems that we still read them today at school.

Our Feelings:

"憫農(mǐn nóng)" means showing sympathy to the peasants. They worked so hard in the fields, sweating a lot for farming. The rice in our bowls that we eat every day, it’s so precious and so hard to get. We must cherish our foods and not to waste them.

About the author:

Han Yu (韓愈) is a Chinese litterateur, philosopher, and thinker in Tang Dynasty. We also call him “Han Wen-Kung”. He was a pioneer and advocate of ancient style prose, which can extend description of classical Chinese writing. The most famous work of him is “On Teaching 師說”, which is a masterpiece that almost every student in Taiwan learns it. He is also the head of those Eight Great Proser between Tang and Song Dynasties.

Our Feelings:

The poem describes the scenes in early spring easily and directly, just like spoken language. Han Yu captured the unique features of spring, bring out the feeling of wandering in the rain. We can feel he is very happy and pleasant.

相思 Yearning

紅豆生南國 (The red bean trees grow in the southern land.)

春來發幾枝 (In spring they grow few more branches.)

願君多采擷 (I hope you could pick a few)

此物最相思 (They would revive your fondest memories.)

About the author:

Wang Wei (王維), who’s from Shanxi in China. A pastoral poet and painter in Tang Dynasty. He’s also called “The Buddha of poem”. He’s very famous. There are many poems students read in our textbooks in Taiwan.

Our Feelings:

In ancient times, a woman cried to death under a tree because of her husband died. It is said that after she died she was turned into red beans, which represented “yearning” afterwards. It is often used in Tang poetry and described about “love” and “missing” in the relationship, which not only between lovers but family or friends. We can feel why and how the author conveyed like this way. It's very beautiful and meaningful.

Meng Haoran, who is a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty, also known as "Meng Xiangyang". He’s good at landscape and pastoral poems.

Our Feelings:

"Spring Dawn” is a poem that describes the affection to spring. It’s very easy to understand, but it has a charming and fluctuating words and rhymes. The poem talked about spring in the beginning, but no more later; however, you can feel all the words he mentioned were about spring, such as dawn, sound of the birds and rain, and flowers. We can even smell the fresh air by reading the poem. How casual!

蜂蝶紛紛過牆去 (Bees and butterflies are flying to the other side of the wall.)

卻疑春色在鄰家 (But I still doubted the spring is still in the neighbor's yard.)

About the author:

Wang Jia (王駕) is a poet in the late Tang dynasty, also called “Mr. Shousu”. In the first year of the Great Shun (大順元年), he entered the Shidi, which is a government position. However, he decided to abandon his career and retire. His style of poems well-conceived and naturally smooth.

Our Feelings:

The impromptu poem “Sunlight after Rain” described not only the scenes before and after the rain, but also the late spring scene while wandering in the garden. The things referred in the poem are simple and normal, but you can see the surprise in the plainness.
