The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization assigned to endorse international unity and to form and manage international order. A restoration for the impotent League of Nations, the organization was entrenched on 24 October 1945 after World War II. It was established in order to avoid another such rivalry. The UN have 193 members. The organization is banked by determined and spontaneous inputs from its member states.

PURPOSE

· Its purpose comprises sustaining global unity and surveillance, encouraging human rights, supporting social and economic advancement, safeguarding the nature, and implementing philanthropic service in cases of poverty, natural calamity, and equipped competition. The UN is vast, most globally characterized and most influential intergovernmental organization in the world.

· United Nations peacebuilding movements are suggested for helping countries appearing from combat, lowering the danger of danger into conflict and at laying the base for sustainable peace and advancement.

· The UN peacebuilding planning includes the Peacebuilding Commission, the Peacebuilding endowment and the Peacebuilding Support Office.

Achievements of UNO

  1. Food Aid- The UN feeds 104 million people in 80 countries through The World Food Program. They feed people in war zones, natural disasters, health emergencies and poor countries.

2. Aid to Refugees- The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has helped 17 million asylum-seekers and refugees. It is protecting and assisting 700,000 people who have fled conflicts in Syria, Mali, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

3. Protecting Children- The UN's agency UNICEF protects the rights of children all over the world and enhance the living standard of children.

4. Peacekeeping- This task is one of the most successful one the UN has undertaken and it has 16 peacekeeping missions in hotspots like Syria, Kosovo, North Korea. With the intervention of the UN many conflicts have been reconciled, thus saving the lives of many people.

5. Running Elections- The UN has fought for the voting right of people in areas where the ideology of dictatorship or monarchy is still dominating. as Iraq.

6.Reproductive Health and Population Management- The UN's population fund has reduced infant and maternal mortality in over 100 countries. There is significant decline in global population growth due to efforts of the UN.

7. War Crimes Prosecution-The UN runs many tribunals has sentenced the rational sanctions to war criminals. The operations of the UN persevere the International Equity and raise awareness about Human Rights and Justice.

8. Fighting AiDS-HIV affected people are supported by the UN and its sub- organizations like the WHO, UNAIDS, and the Global Funds. The UN ensures implementation of appropriate programs for prevention and treatment of AIDS.

9. Bringing invisible issues to the Forefront-The UN has brought to forefront the issues like landmine victims, Marburg Fever, Cholera sufferes, child soldiers, modern-day slavery.

The lofty contributions of the UN for the global issues has inspired us, the global citizens and motivated us to live more humanely and responsibly.

United Nations Security Council Veto Power

The United Nations Security Council "power of veto" refers to the power exercised by the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council to prevent the adoption of any "substantive" resolution, as well as decide which issues fall under "substantive" title. The United Nations Security Council has 15 members including 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly; but only its five permanent members hold the power to impose a veto on the council's resolutions

This vote comes into action when any of its five permanent members “P5” casts a "negative" vote on a "substantive" draft resolution. If any of the permanent member is absent still it does not prevent a draft resolution from being adopted.

This veto power was exercised recently when Russia and China voted against a draft resolution that would have condemned a crackdown on anti-government protests in Syria and called on the Syrian president, Mr. Bashar al-Assad to step aside.
