Students invited to participate in priority registration for summer learning should refer to the information emailed from their school regarding registration for project-based learning.
GHS students advised of need for credit recovery should register ASAP; families can always cancel registration if they find the program is no longer needed.

Note that enrollment in offerings is generally done on a first come, first served basis, and programs may be adjusted or cancelled subject to enrollment. You will receive an email confirmation of enrollment following the May 27 deadline. Families that completed registration by 6/2/22 have received enrollment confirmation emails. All registration for Session 1 is closed. Session 2 credit recovery continues through 6/24.
The Griswold Public Schools' Summer Learning program will take place in two sessions:
Session 1 runs from June 20-June 30
Session 2 runs from July 11-July 21
Students may enroll in one or both sessions, provided they are participating in different offerings during each session.
All opportunities will be offered on the Griswold Public Schools campus Monday-Thursday from 8-11 am.

GHS students who are supporting programs as volunteers can earn community service credit. If bus transportation is needed, students can contact the summer learning coordinators about registration.
Sessions Available: Session 1, June 20-June 30; Session 2, July 11-July 21
Description: Projects and investigations will be determined by grade-level teachers, and in some cases, by the students themselves! Students will be actively engaged in meaningful work with peers that requires collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, communication, and perseverance. Students will learn important grade-level skills while investigating their theme and have the opportunity to showcase their achievements at the end of the session.
Sessions Available: Session 1, June 20-June 30
Instructors: Christina Connors and Carly Sebastian (GES teachers)
Description: Tinker, experiment, and design! Students will participate in guided exploration of different areas of STEAM content (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) each day, as well as have free time to experiment and create. Planned activities include outdoor exploration and nature art, 3-D printing, coding challenges, fun with simple machines, LEGO projects, math puzzles and riddles, and more!

Description: Middle school aged students will learn about the process of live streaming, create multimedia content, and then produce live streaming and recorded video segments. This program is ideal for students who enjoy learning new technologies for video production, writing/producing scripts, or speaking to an audience.

Instructor: Joy Smith (GMS Spanish)
Description: Students will experience the structure and sound of the Spanish language while exploring four Spanish-speaking regions through culture, stories, art and play. Students will engage in hands-on activities of traditional arts and crafts, music, and food preparation as they learn more about Spanish language and culture.

Description: Students will use computers, tools, and machines to create hands-on projects and activities in the Tech-Ed lab environment.

Instructor: Kostas Efthimiou (GMS/GHS Physical Education & Health)
Description: Students will improve their physical skills like muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance while participating in different activities and games. Students will practice teamwork, cooperation, strategizing, sportsmanship, and communication skills as they work together in teams towards achieving a common goal.

Instructors: James Young, Cara Brouillard (GMS Math)
Description: This program is designed to provide specific instruction to those students in grades 7-8 who will be enrolled in Geometry or Algebra next year. The invitation-only GMS Algebra Prep and Geometry Prep classes are designed to provide students with additional learning that will prepare them for next year’s advanced math class.

Instructor: Kyle Gunderman (GPS Technology Department)
Description: Students will learn the different methods, equipment and software used to produce live video, from selfie stream using just a smart phone, to full studio productions that rival what we see on TV. This is the enrichment opportunity that welcomes students to bring their phone to school!
High school students who attend both weeks can earn .25 credit.

Instructor: Jennifer Kinsall (GHS English)
Description: This opportunity is available to students in need of credit-recovery in English. Students will investigate why "a perfect world" is so hard to realize. Students will explore questions of power, fear, and truth as they read examples of dystopian literature and conduct student-driven research on the real-world implications of these dystopian concepts. Each group will choose a topic, and individuals will research and then collaborate to help their group lead the class in discussion on their chosen topic. Writing with evidence about literature and writing in response to research will be essential to successful completion of the course.
Students must finish the required coursework by the end of the session to earn credit.

Description: This opportunity is available to students in need of credit-recovery in math courses. The class will use blended learning to individualize student "math paths," with technology-based programs providing math lessons and practice suited to their needs, while still participating in whole class math learning experiences that apply math to real-world situations.
Students must finish the required coursework by the end of the session to earn credit.

Instructors: Susan Salley and Graham Thompson (GHS)
Description: This opportunity is available to students in need of credit-recovery in English, social studies, science, health, Capstone personal finance, or other available elective areas. Students can work at their own pace on computer-based modules with teacher support. Students must finish the required coursework by the end of the session to earn credit.
The summer music program will afford incoming middle school and grades 6-12 musicians the opportunity to work with the GPS Music Department. Activities will be performance-based--fun and learning will be the name of the game! Refer to the specific music program offerings below for dates and eligibility.

Instructors: Amanda Richmond (GMS/GHS Band Director) and Mike Albaine (GMS/GHS String Director)
Description: Open to 4th graders planning to participate in GMS music ensembles, especially those excited to start learning an instrument in Band or Orchestra next year. Students will play games, sing, explore music, learn what instrument "fits" their skills, and start the process of getting an instrument--all while having fun with friends! Students will enjoy guest performances, and an opportunity to try out instruments as part of our Instrument Petting Zoo Day, sponsored by Music and Arts.

Instructors: Ray Churchill (GHS Choral Director), supported by Amanda Richmond (GMS/GHS Band Director) and Mike Albaine (GMS/GHS Strings Director)
Description: This two week class is designed to offer a relaxed and fun opportunity for students with or without choral experience to build skills, momentum, and excitement going into the fall semester. Students will be separated into groups and have daily instruction on sight reading, music theory and vocal technique. Beginning vocalists will get a personalized introduction to vocal performance. All students will perform with small and large ensembles singing with the help of peer/faculty tutors. Students will learn different aspects of vocal performance from guest artists, learn jazz, pop and standard choral music, and enjoy exercise and bond with their new choirmates.
A recital video will be made at the end and posted for parents. High school students who attend both weeks can earn .25 credit.

Instructors: Amanda Richmond (GMS/GHS Band Director) and Mike Albaine (GMS/GHS String Director), supported by Ray Churchill (GHS Choral Director)
Description: The Griswold Band and Strings Programs, grades 6-12, will spend two weeks together playing exciting, new music with the goal of improving performance on their instrument at all levels! Students will polish skills while they rehearse in large ensembles and small sectional groups, play musical games, and bond while going head to head in group competitions --all while also enjoying the fun and games associated with summer! Students will enjoy guest artist performances and presentations throughout the session! Here in Griswold, we BAND together!
A recital video will be made at the end and posted for parents. High school students who attend both weeks can earn .25 credit.
Transportation is not available for this single day program.

Instructor: Erin Palonen (GHS Principal)
Description: Open to ALL incoming 9th graders – including our town partners from Canterbury, Lisbon, Voluntown, Preston, Sprague, Franklin, and Norwich. This is an opportunity to collaborate with Principal Palonen in preparing students for high school. The goal is make all incoming ninth grade students feel excited and inspired about this new milestone. Students will get to know the many opportunities available at GHS to support its mission of empowering students to become compassionate, confident, creative and resourceful members of society.
Note that students attending this single morning program need their own transportation. High school students who attend this can earn community service hours toward their graduation requirement.
