This course will reflect current trends in healthcare with the ultimate goal of having students acquire the knowledge and skills that will help foster a healthy lifestyle. Topics for discussion will include nutrition, physical activity, mental and emotional health (to include dating violence), disease prevention (to include AIDS and STD prevention), safety and accident prevention, drug and substance abuse prevention, communication skills, and community and consumer health. The focus of the course will be on wellness as a means to prevent illness and lower risk-taking activities.

This course is designed to help students make important decisions relating to nutrition and exercise for athletes. The focus of this course is on individual dietary needs, healthy body weight, and active participation in leisure activities. Students will learn about weight control, special diets and food for athletes. Students will also be learning about exercising and training for particular sports/events. Students will create their own fitness plan designed to improve their performance and carry it out when using the fitness room. This course is articulated with CT State Community College; students can earn three college credits at no cost by completing registration with the community college.

This one semester course will reflect current trends in safety, health, and wellness with the ultimate goal of preparing students to continue living
a healthy lifestyle after high school. Topics addressed include violence prevention, CPR and first aid, life-long wellness and disease prevention, community and consumer health. Units will include review and extension of the knowledge and skills acquired from Health
Education, including statutory requirements related to sexual health, mental health, and substance abuse education.

Physical Education classes consist of daily physical fitness and life-long sports/activities. Students are assessed on performance and effort for both physical fitness and sports/activities. The freshmen program may cover the fundamentals of the following sports/activities: aerobics, archery, badminton, basketball,
cooperative games, dance, deck tennis, disc golf, field games, fitness or trail walking/jogging, flag football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, sport stacking, tennis,
ultimate frisbee, volleyball, and weight/resistance training. All students are given a mandatory physical fitness assessment. This test must be completed by all freshmen in the spring or fall semesters and is a pre-assessment to the CT State Physical Fitness Assessment.

Weight Training/Fitness Center will be a class in the fitness center where students will have the opportunity design a personal fitness program specific to their goals. These programs will include work-outs using different cardio machines, such as bikes, treadmills, elliptical machines, and steppers, in conjunction with weights and a variety of fitness equipment.

In this course, students will participate in indoor and outdoor team sports. Outdoor team sports will be comprised of 3 weeks of tournaments for each of the following sports; flag football, soccer/lacrosse, and softball. Indoor team sports will be comprised of 3 weeks of tournaments for each of the following sports; basketball, volleyball, and team handball/speedball.
*Juniors & Seniors may take up to 1.0 credit per year of Physical Education & Wellness electives.
