Year 7 & 8 Digital Technologies 2018

Big Picture Ideas

If we were to create a game how would we control the robot ?

Through an exposure to various robots, their digital systems; input, output and storage functions, students will gather ideas for their own robotic project. While researching various projects, they will also explore Internet of Things and control their robot through Apps on the iPad.

Using both computational thinking and design ideas they will demonstrate their ability to test and evaluate their project and obtain user feedback to implement changes.

Context

Student are introduced to computational thinking through hands discovery and elements of design thinking from the perspective of an end user. A variety of robots, hybrid graphical programming languages provide a stepping stone for the students to explore Python and JavaScript while they design their projects, with a specific focus on controlling their device.

Term 3

Term 4

Module 1

Progress Outcomes

Through developing and trialing their Sphero robot projects students will show that they can:

Draw on their knowledge of how components function and work together to understand input, output and processes. They will demonstrate

  • connect input sensors to their processing device
  • control the output devices (motors) by writing and downloading programs
  • test that their system works
  • identify malfunctions and failures within the system and fix errors.

Week 1 & 2

The Mosaic is a one-stop-shop for all the learning interactions, and its collation and curation. The rubric and portfolio permits the tracking and reviewing based on the teacher feedback and self and peer reflections.

HOW THINGS WORK/DESIGN PROCESS

  • Students will refresh their understanding of the design process using the Sphero Edu site.
  • They will work in groups to recognize how Sphero moves by using the manoeuverability and drawing App
  • Individually they will research an initial project that they will like to work with their group as they set up a power point of their Digital Technologies Journey @ GHS
  • Introduced to the design process they start off on their Agile journey to manage the project using the learning canvas

Module 2

Progress Outcomes

Through developing and trialing their robot students will show show that they can:

draw on their knowledge of how components function and work together to transform

  • inputs into outputs
  • connect input sensors (colour and ultrasonic) to their processing device
  • control the output devices (motors) by writing and downloading programs
  • test that their system works
  • identify malfunctions and failures within the system and fix errors.

Week 5 & 6

INNOVATIVE DESIGN / SENSORS & MAZES

What students will learn

What is a robot and what is robotics?

  • What makes the Ozobot move?
  • How can you control your Robot?

Topics

  • Robotics/ Maths: following instructions on a grid
  • Physics: optics
  • Computer science: visual coding Use visual codes to navigate paths
  • Real-life connection: How navigation works in everyday life ( basic grid)

Students work in teams to go through the design process and use this to create their project with ideas from the Ozobot

Resources

Week 7 & 8

SENSORS & MAZES

  • What students will learn

How to write a program?

  • How can the Ozobot move on a given path?

Topics

  • Robotics/ Maths: following instructions
  • Physics: visual / optics
  • Computer science: visual coding/ circuits
  • Real-life connection: Controlling functions with Robots

Students work in teams create a sequential quest for their robot. They then test this out with their peer to get feedback. This reinforces the iterative process.
