The prefix "geo-" means "earth" or "world" and the suffix "-metry" means "the measure of." Geometry is really interesting because it is essentially the math of the world. The geometry we typically study today is Euclidean Geometry, which dates back all the way to 300 BCE, and was pioneered by a man named Euclid who wrote about geometry in a thirteen-volume series he called Elements.
Rather than memorizing formulas students are likely to forget after a test or a course, geometry teaches students to see and truly understand how math works in the world so that they can derive formulas on their own or solve problems without them. We will be practicing a lot of that abstract thinking in this course.
A preview of the topics we will study is listed below. This is an honors level, high school credit-bearing course, and it moves quickly and goes deep into geometry. We will cover all of the 8th Grade Geometry with Statistics standards and study additional enrichment topics.
We will be using the McGraw Hill Course 3 Accelerated textbooks.
