I'm Mollye Spitler, one of the art teachers at Sterling School. This is my seventeenth year teaching art. It has been a wonderful delight teaching a wide range of students and being a part of the community of families throughout Greenville. It is such a joy to be in my 8th year at Sterling and I look forward to carrying on the incredible art teaching this school has known. Our art program is one of the strongest in the district and I cannot wait to see the artistic growth this year! One of my favorite parts of being an art teacher is getting to see students grow from sweet little Kindergartners to articulate and creative middle schoolers. I am so honored to have Judy Harrington as my team mate another year! We make a great team and are going to do incredible things for our school again this year!
I graduated from Furman University as a studio art major and then completed my Masters in Teaching Art at the University of South Carolina. I have also completed and additional 30 hours of graduate credit as well as pursuing an endorsement for teaching the artistically gifted and talented. I love living in Greenville where the community is so involved in the arts (Check out the Arts Calendar for local art events!). I love to teach children and adults in painting and pottery and other private art lessons in my home studio. I also have my own art business selling clay jewelry and tableware called Mollye South Designs.
Art is a wonderful tool of expression and communication. I hope to share my love of art with each student that steps into my classroom. Hopefully this year the artists at Sterling will be able to share our love and new knowledge of art with those in the Nicholtown and Greenville community and surrounding areas. I love traveling all over the world and have many pictures to show you of art from many different countries. Every culture has such rich traditions and forms of art from which we can all learn.
I love teaching art, but also I love making art! I am an artist and have my own home studio where I make art too! I love all types of art, but my favorites printmaking, painting, and ceramics. Some of my favorite artists include Claude Monet, Rene Magritte, Hans Hofmann, Elizabeth Catlett, Alberto Giacometti, and Daniel Essig.
It is so important to keep growing and learning from young to old. I learn new things from my students every day. I also attend state art education conferences and collaborate with other art teachers to make sure I am always becoming a better art teacher. I am a member of our SC Art Education Association, where I've been the elementary board representative and was awarded 2021 Art Educator of the Year.
