Counseling Services

  • Individual Counseling: Individual counseling is provided for students in areas of personal and social need, educational and academic concerns, and career education. The counselors work to identify problems, causes, alternatives, and possible consequences so that appropriate decisions can be made and/or appropriate action can be taken. During individual counseling sessions, problem-solving, social, and coping skills can be modeled by the counselor and practiced by the student.

  • Small Group Counseling: Counselors provide small group counseling based on a student survey of interest and need or teacher and parent referral. The counselor will act as the group facilitator for 2-6 students as they work on shared tasks, develop skills, or focus on a specific issue. Topics might include: peer mediation, relationship skills, anger management, and/or attendance improvement, etc.

  • Classroom Guidance: These are activities and lessons that are taught by counselors to a whole class. These topics will be relevant to all students, such as career interests, class registration, or conflict management skills.

  • Individual Planning: Beginning in the 8th grade, students will conduct their Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) conference. Along with their counselor and parent, students will discuss academic progress, along with high school and post-secondary plans.

  • Referral: Upon request, counselors make referrals to appropriate community agencies. These referral sources may include Communities in Schools, mental health agencies, Department of Social Services, and other human service agencies as deemed appropriate.

  • Crisis Counseling: Support and short-term counseling are provided to students and their families facing crisis situations. Appropriate community referrals are made when necessary.

All services offered by the school counselors are within the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Standards. These standards guide counselors to help students by identifying and prioritizing the specific attitudes, knowledge, and skills that students should be able to demonstrate as a result of participating in a comprehensive school counseling program.
