Course Description:
In this introductory course, you will be introduced to the discipline of ceramic arts through the exploration of techniques, skills, and styles. We will learn about ceramics artists of our time, artists of the past, and ourselves as artists. The art that we will create will be three- dimensional sculptural and functional work. We will learn basic techniques in hand building with clay, such as slab and coil building. There will be opportunities for you to expand your creativity and push your minds to the limit while learning the basics of ceramic art.

Students are expected to be:
Present, on time, and in assigned seat by the bell (present each day of elearning, no working ahead)
Prepared for class
Hardworking and focused
Respectful and courteous
Turn in work on time. You will lose points on late work.
All students are responsible for:
Completing and turning in each and every assignment by its due date.
o If not finished, find time to come in to classroom and work on it so no late points will be deducted.
Earning and maintaining their overall grade and demonstrating successful progression toward meeting performance objectives through the following means:
o Keep classroom clean. No food, candy, or drinks in the classroom to ensure health, safety and preservation of individual art.
o Working on related arts goals for 100% of class period.
o Participate in class discussions, critiques, and other class activities.
o Create original works of art that meet lesson objectives and rubric.
o Be attentive and respectful toward teacher, substitute teacher, other artists, class space, demonstrations, and the overall classroom environment.
o Demonstrating proper care and maintenance of equipment, tools, workspace, and supplies.
o Attending support in the classroom when needed (times to be announced).
If a student damages, destroys, or substantially decreases the value of school property, the principle shall require the student’s parent to make restitution.
Course Curriculum:
We will follow South Carolina Visual Art Standards throughout this course.
Anchor Standard 1: I can use the elements and principles of art to create artwork.
Anchor Standard 2: I can use different materials, techniques, and processes to make art.
Anchor Standard 3: I can improve and complete artistic work using elements and principles.
Anchor Standard 4: I can organize work for presentation and documentation to reflect specific content, ideas, skills, and or media.
Anchor Standard 5: I can interpret and evaluate the meaning of an artwork.
Anchor Standard 6: I can identify and examine the role of visual arts through history and world cultures.
Anchor Standard 7: I can relate visual arts ideas to other arts disciplines, content areas, and careers.
We will also be learning through the Elements of Art (Shape, Form, Value, Line, Color, Space, and Texture) and Principles of Design (Balance, Rhythm, Movement, Emphasis, Pattern, Repetition, Variety, Proportion, and Unity)
Curriculum consists of participation, minor projects, and major projects.
Through these standards, elements, and principles we will be studying:
Grading:
40% Minor
Assessments might include but are not limited to: Small lessons, evaluation of skill development, and quizzes
60% Major
Assessments might include but are not limited to: major class assignments, final projects, art portfolios, exhibitions, major exams, and large group projects.
***All submissions should be saved in the proper place with the proper name ON TIME for grading purposes. Each assignment will have a rubric to follow with instructions specific to that assignment.
Extra credit can be earned throughout the year on assignments I will share with the class at a later time.
Late Work Policy: 10 points off per day, max of 60 if turned in by end of unit, max of 50 if turned in after the unit *DAY IS DEFINED BY CLASS PERIOD*
Missing work: All work can be re-submitted for a higher grade. The only way you cannot regain points is by submitting the work late and gaining late points.
