Mrs. Ruiz’s Fourth Grade Homework Policy
Homework is an important part of our journey, and here's how it will work from Monday-Thursday:
Types of Homework:
1. Nightly IXL: IXL is a learning program that helps students master skills in both Language Arts and Math. This program allows me to see specific item types that students are struggling with, and the data helps me to be more intentional with my teaching from day-to-day. Students will typically be assigned 1 skill in Language Arts and 1 skill in Math each night, and they will often have time to complete these skills in class, as long as their in-class assignments have been completed.
2. Nightly reading for at least 10 minutes: I ask my 4th graders to read for at least 10 minutes each night because it can significantly boost their exposure to print, improve school performance, expand vocabulary, enhance creativity, foster empathy, and promote better sleep by reducing screen time before bed. Although I can't check if each student reads every night, I rely on an honesty policy and trust that my students and their parents understand the importance of this habit.
3. Special Missions: Occasionally, you'll have a take-home project or an interesting homework assignment from another subject. It's a chance to explore, be creative, and learn in a new way!
*Homework is posted Monday-Thursday on our Homeroom Google Classroom Stream. At the beginning of the year, students will set up a Homework Binder with their agenda and notebook paper to use for scratch work. This will stay in their backpack and will be checked in class as needed.
Homework Routine:
Homework Time: Students should spend around 30-45 minutes on homework each night. For students who need more of a challenge, I may assign additional homework to help meet that 30 minute mark if I feel it will be beneficial. If your student is struggling with the assigned IXL skills and has tried their best for 45 minutes, please have them stop and write down specific questions they have in their Homework Binder so that I can help them the following morning.
Homework Check: IXL skills will be checked each morning for completion. If I notice that homework is not being completed on a regular basis, I will reach out to parents/guardians to check-in.
Benefits of Homework:
Super Brain Power: Doing homework helps your brain stay sharp and strong. Just like practicing soccer makes you a better player, practicing homework makes you a super learner!
Confidence Boost: When you conquer homework, you'll feel super proud of yourself. Imagine how great it'll feel to raise your hand with the answer in class!
Learning Fun: Homework isn't a boring chore – it's a chance to explore new things, practice skills, and discover your strengths.
Remember, homework is your secret weapon for becoming an awesome learner. Let's make this year full of growth, fun, and lots of learning adventures!
