Hello students and families! My name is Mirna Hawthorne, and I’m thrilled to be your 4th grade teacher this year. This will mark my 23rd year in education and my 9th in 4th grade—my favorite grade level!
I hold a master’s degree in Curriculum Design from George Mason University. My teaching journey has taken me to international schools in Russia, Brazil, and Bulgaria, where I’ve served in roles ranging from classroom aide to grade level head teacher. In the United States, I’ve taught first grade in California and now 4th grade here in GCSD.
I also serve as a Teacher Liaison for the Space Foundation and am passionate about promoting educational programs through the lens of space exploration. In 2023–2024, I was honored to be named AJW Teacher of the Year and proud to represent our incredible school.
I was born and raised in Croatia and Serbia, and my life journey has taken me all over the world! I’ve had the pleasure of traveling extensively while pursuing my studies in various countries. I speak five languages and have a passion for discovering new places and cultures.
My husband, Casey, and I met in Moscow, Russia. We have three daughters: Mila (16), Madi (15), and Marissa (12). Our family loves Broadway tunes—we’re always singing!
Teaching is one of my greatest joys, and I can’t wait to begin this school year. It’s going to be the best one yet!
