AP Art and Design — Year-Long Timeline
Applies to AP 2-D Art and Design, AP 3-D Art and Design, and AP Drawing. Portfolios require a Sustained Investigation (15 images/pieces showing inquiry-based exploration) and Selected Works (5 pieces demonstrating strongest work). Submission is digital, due in early May
Year before doing AP:
Review the three AP portfolios and requirements with your teachers; understand the difference between Sustained Investigation and Selected Works.
August - September:
Understand the difference between Sustained Investigation and Selected Works.
Begin brainstorming questions, themes, or materials.
Experiment broadly with multiple media and approaches.
Goal: Draft a 1-2 sentence artist statement/guiding question.
October - November:
Select a sustained question to explore in depth.
Start producing finished pieces (aim for 1 every 2–3 weeks).
Document process (material tests, sketchbook pages, WIP photos).
Continue steady production of AP pieces.
Maintain a spreadsheet of titles, media, and dimensions.
Revisit early work to ensure alignment with evolving inquiry.
December:
Midpoint Goal: 6–8 pieces substantially complete.
Review body of work for evidence of inquiry and revision.
Identify candidates for Selected Works.
Photograph/scan finished works with professional lighting.
Draft Sustained Investigation written responses (reflection questions).
January:
Show your New Semester teacher your AP
Get formal critique on 3–5 pieces and your draft SI written responses (reflection questions).
February - March:
Target: 10–12 pieces completed.
Start Uploading images to AP Digital Portfolio.
Start final selection for Sustained Investigation (15 pieces total).
Photograph/scan finished works with professional lighting.
April:
Finalize photography and revision of reflection statements.
Finish uploading images to AP Digital Portfolio website.
Sequence images to show progression; proofread all text.
First week in May :
Complete final digital submission before the deadline.
Verify all dimensions and written entries; backup all work.

November: Join AP Classroom, Join Digital Uploading site, Writing your AP Statement, AP Planning Guide,
Q3 Meeting:
January: Check-in: AP Planning guide + Uploading, Prepare for Writing Workshop

March: Upload images and informatiion, Refine AP questions and writings
May: Once you are done, submit everything to AP
