Fire Fighter I Syllabus

 Description

This program prepares individuals to do the work of firefighters and Fire Fighter I is the pre-requisite course for advancing to Fire Fighter II.  This course provides an accredited pathway through the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress and/or Pro Board certification which are obtainable through the South Carolina State Fire Academy (SCFA).

This Career and Technology Center Firefighter I course achieves NFPA 1001 training level using curriculum addressing both South Carolina State Department of Education and NFPA standards.  Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, CPR and First Aid are additional courses taught in the program. 

Students successfully completing practical skills check-off and the written exam with a score of 70% or greater will receive a 1196 course certificate from the South Carolina Fire Academy. Students who have not yet attained the age of 18 will receive a provisional certificate which becomes effective on their 18th birthday.

Students receiving a 1196 course certificate will be offered opportunities to challenge the IFSAC national FFI certification exam.

Expectations and Goals

·        Academic testing is conducted for each chapter and module.  An accreditation test is administered by a South Carolina Fire Academy certified test proctor at the end of the course.  A minimum of 70% is required to pass the course.  At the conclusion of the course, a SCFA test proctor conducts practical testing of skills.  The skills are objectively measured by pass or fail with students allowed 3 opportunities of completing the skill.

·        South Carolina Department of Labor and the SCFA requires all students to be a minimum of 16 years of age at the time of registration.

·        Each student must become an active member of a local fire department.  The student must belong to a sanctioned Junior Fire Fighter program or a Boy Scouts of America Fire Explorer Post.  Donaldson Career Center offers memberships to Belmont Fire Department as the sponsoring fire department.

·        Students should have a strong understanding of Math, Science, and Physics.

Emergency Management Syllabus

COURSE CODE:  6511206 DC

 DESCRIPTION:  The emergency management/firefighting course is a two-year program designed to prepare the student to take the national examination.  The student receives training in basic principles of firefighting, history of the fire service, tools and equipment, search and rescue, ladder climbing, knot tying, first response to incidents and more.  The course of study includes many basic functions enabling the student, after successful completion of the national examination, to get into the job market at entry level.

 A.
