Your "little one" is on the verge of becoming a teenager--and slowly developing the identity of an independent adult. One of the first big transitions on that journey is the move from elementary school to middle school, an event that brings excitement and anxiety to students and parents! Check back for updates, upcoming events, and general information about preparing for middle school.
Choosing and Applying to Middle School
Begin researching middle school options on this website.
Attend Open Houses by middle schools that you are interested in:
Contact your choice school to find out if they offer an open house.
Wednesday, October 22:
8:00 a.m. (Master Lab): In-person 5th grade parent meeting about applying to middle school.
6:00 p.m. (Virtual): Virtual meeting covering the same topics as in the morning for parents who cannot attend in-person.
November 10, 2025:
Magnet school application window opens (Round 1).
School Choice Lottery window opens for non-magnet schools (including virtual program).
November 25, 2025: Application window closes for Round 1 Magnet applications and the School Choice Lottery. This is earlier than in the past!
In early December, Magnet schools notify parents if their children have received a spot at the magnet school(s) they have applied to. Parents have one week to let the school know if their students will take the spot.
January 6: Middle schools begin hosting curriculum nights for current and future students (finished by February 13).
Early February: Be on the lookout for information from the school counselor about registering for classes in sixth grade.
Monday, February 9, 2026:
2:45 p.m. (Master Lab): In-person parent meeting about helping your student register for middle school courses.
6:00 p.m. (Virtual): Virtual meeting covering the same topics as in the morning for parents who cannot attend in-person.
By Wednesday, February 11, 2026: Lottery results for the school choice program are published on the Greenville County Schools website.
February 17-20: 5th grade students register for classes.
March 12, 2026: Student course request letters are sent home to families. Please review and return at the end of spring break.
By Tuesday, March 31, 2026: School assignment letters are mailed to families. If your student is not assigned to the school of choice, he or she will be placed on that school's waiting list.
Attend special orientation sessions for rising 6th graders at the assigned middle school.
An official sixth grade orientation event will be held at each middle school right before school begins. The student's schedule will be released at this time.
