Exciting days, fifth grade parents!
Your "little one" is now on the verge of becoming a teenager--and slowly beginning to develop the identity of an independent adult. One of the first big transitions on that journey is the move from elementary school to middle school, an event that brings excitement and anxiety to students and parents! Check this page frequently for updates, upcoming events, and general information about preparing for middle school.

Begin researching middle school options on this website.
October-November
Attend Open Houses by middle schools that you are interested in:
Contact your choice school to find out if they offer an open house.
November
Monday, November 13, 8:00 a.m. : Magnet school application window opens (Round 1). It is extremely important to apply during Round 1, as very few students who apply in later rounds get a spot at the school. Applications are available through Backpack, or paper copies are available by request from the magnet academy.
Monday, November 13: School Choice Lottery window opens for non-magnet schools. You must request an application from the office of your student's first-choice school.
December
Friday, December 1, 4:00 p.m.: Magnet school application window closes (Round 1).
End of day Friday, December 1: School Choice Lottery window closes. Applications must be turned in to the office at your student's first-choice school before the office closes for the day.
December 8: Magnet schools notify parents if their children have received a spot at the magnet school(s) they have applied to. Parents must let the school know if their students will take the spot by December 15.
February
Be on the lookout for information from the school counselor about registering for classes in sixth grade.
Middle schools host curriculum nights for current and future students.
No later than Wednesday, February 7: Lottery results for the school choice program are published on the Greenville County Schools website.
February 26-March 1: 5th grade students register for classes during the registration window.
March
Friday, March 29: School assignment letters are mailed to families indicating the school the student has been assigned to for sixth grade. If your student is not assigned to the school of choice, he or she will be placed on that school's waiting list.
April
Parents should review the course request list, which will be sent home with the students, and sign that they approve of them.
April-May
Attend special orientation sessions for rising 6th graders at the assigned middle school.
August
An official sixth grade orientation event will be held at each middle school right before school begins. The student's schedule will be given to the student and the student's parents at this time.
Do not forget this date!!
Applications for middle school are due December 1!
Friday, December 1, 2023, at 4:00 is the end of Round 1 of Magnet Academy applications; December 1 is also the deadline for applying to a middle school through School Choice, which must be done at the middle school you'd like to apply for before their office closes for the day.
Applications MUST be in by the deadline or your student will be at the end of a very long waiting list!
