Greenville County Schools opens all our quality schools to students across the district through Change in Assignment Choice. While students are assigned to a school ("home-based") according to their custodial parents' address, parents may apply for their children to attend a different school.
Each school in Greenville County offers a certain number of seats to non-home-based students; this number is determined each year based on the district demographics plan for that school. Acceptance into a choice school is determined by a lottery (Magnet Academies have a different process). Parents must apply during the lottery window to receive a lottery number for their student.
Bus transportation is not available for students attending a school through Change in Assignment Choice.
Monday, November 10: The Change in Assignment Choice lottery window begins.
Tuesday, November 25: The Change in Assignment Choice lottery window ends.
Wednesday, February 11, 2026: GCS will have posted the lottery results to its website.
Tuesday, March 31, 2026: GCS will have mailed notification letters to inform parents if their student received a slot at a requested school or was placed on the waitlist.
Starting November 10, parents should visit the front office of the school they would like their child to attend and complete a 1-page Change in Assignment Choice application. The application includes a number that allows you to access your child's lottery number later in the spring--be sure to hold on to it!
You may apply to as many as three middle schools on the application. Submit the application at your first-choice school.
It is extremely important that you submit the application during the application window to receive a lottery number. Many schools have waitlists, and students who do not turn in an application by end of the application window (and therefore do not receive a lottery number) will be added to the waitlist following the students with lottery numbers.
By February 11, access your student's lottery result on the Change in Assignment Choice website (you will need the number on your student's application). The school your student has applied to will offer slots to students based on the lottery numbers until all slots are filled.
By March 31, you will receive a letter informing you if your student received a slot at your requested school or was placed on the waitlist. If your child did not receive a slot at the requested school, his or her waitlist number will be provided. As spaces become available, students on the waitlist will be admitted through the first 10 days of the next school year.
