Math Counts is an after school club for students interested in math competition. This is a national math club program.
Meetings: Once a month online in Oct 2026-Feb 2027
The Math Contest Club (MC2) invites students who want to take the Mathcounts and the AMC8 contests that are open to anyone at the 8th grade level and lower. Students who wish to take these contests in the 8th grade still need to start preparing from the 6th grade. The questions on these contests go significantly beyond the standard school curriculum and challenge the students' thinking, depth of understanding and speed. Contest preparation is a good foundation for future classes and careers in math, physics, computer science, economics, robotics and engineering.
Expected Instruction: For example the SC state math team meets once a month in Columbia for 4-5 hours and it is exclusively pen paper work with the math teachers/coaches writing on the board.
Resources - Several free online resources will be posted in the Google Classroom along with problem sets Dr. Tallapragada have created. Textbooks for purchase will be recommended.
Use of Calculators and AI - These are not allowed. Students should not use Google, Gemini, GPT etc to solve problems. Looking at the solutions that AI tools give can create the illusion of understanding, but very little learning takes place. Calculators are not allowed in any competition at any grade (or college) level and club members are strongly discouraged from using calculators.
Homework - students are encouraged to work on problems. To be successful, students are encouraged to spend an hour every day doing math with pen and paper.
