Why?
When we encourage behaviors that we expect to see in our students we: create a positive learning environment, make learning more effective, encourage social development, create a sense of respect for rules and authority, prepare students for the future, and reduce chance of overall disruption.
Steps for Encouraging Expected Classroom Behavior
Define Clear Expectations
Discuss and Explain
Model Behaviors
Practice and Role Play
Include Visual Aids
Adapt as Needed
Acknowledge and Reward Behaviors Immediately
Provide Specific Praise. ("I like the way you asked me for help," "Thank you for raising your hand," "Nice job waiting for me to come to you.")
Provide Continuous Feedback
Remember the 5:1 Rule. (Students should receive 5 positive statements to every 1 negative one)
Direct to the Expected Behavior (i.e. "I am looking for quiet voices," vs. "Stop Talking.")
Refer to any Visual Aids to Listed Expectations Defined During Teaching and Modeling.
Provide Practice and Modeling as needed
