What is it?
Establishing effective classroom rules and procedures early is a key to successful classroom management. Examples include; entering and exiting the classroom, turning in assignments, asking for help, independent work time, whole group instruction, coming to the group area, bathroom, etc.
Routines and procedures are not a "one and done" expectation you reference; all routines need to be modeled, practiced, and reviewed just like any academic skill.
Don't feel silly teaching and modeling these as a class. Even older students have fun with it and can enjoy the spotlight while they practice.
