Jazz 101
Jazz 101 is our main jazz band. A jazz band is most often made up of six saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, and a rhythm section made up of piano, guitar, bass, and drum set. Our jazz band will meet in sectionals over the Summer and in the Fall. Our first competition of the year is the SCIBA Jazz Festival on the second weekend of December. The winner and runner-up of SCIBA Jazz automatically qualify for Iowa Jazz Championships.

Jazz Combos
A jazz combo is a small group of jazz musicians including at the very least: piano, guitar, bass, drums, and a soloist. Often, jazz combos play classic jazz melodies and then improvise completely new music on the chord changes for several minutes. Jazz and jazz improvisation are an important part of our music heritage in Greene County, and they feature prominently in my curriculum.
