What is the Skills and Drill Challenge?
The Skills and Drills Challenge was created to challenge players on their basketball skills in various challenges. There will be three main areas of competition: Three-point Shoot-out, Pass- turn- shoot, and the Skills Relay.
How do we win?
First, second, and third place winners will be determined for each leg once all challenges have been completed. Awards will be presented to the winning school for each challenge at the end of the day. A Triple Crown will be awarded for a school that wins first place in all challenges.
Why aren't we playing against other teams?
This skills challenge tests your individual basketball and team skills against other schools. This is not a traditional basketball tournament.
The Challenges
Three-Point Shootout
(2 players)
In this challenge, 2 total players from each team must participate. One player is designated the shooter, and the second player will be the rebounder.
Heats: There will be a total of two heats in this challenge. At the start of the second heat, shooter and rebounder must switch roles. Each heat is a max 2 minute long.
In this contest, players attempt to make as many three-point field goals as possible from five positions behind the three-point arch in one minute.
Players begin shooting from the 3-point arch one corner of the court and move from station to station until all shots are completed at each station. Once all shots are completed, that players' turn is over.
Each shot completed from stations 1-5 is worth 1 point.
Scoring: The top three teams with the highest scores with the fastest times at the end of the challenge will be awarded first, second, or third place at the end of the tournament.
Ties: In the event of a tie, an extra round of 30 seconds is played to determine the winner. The team with the most points after the 30 seconds wins. Only one shooter per team.
Shooting Violation: If a player at the time of shooting crosses the three-point arch, that shot will be invalid even if the shot was made. The ref will have the final say in contested shots.
Post-Pass-Shoot Drill
(5 players)
In this challenge the entire team must participate. The purpose of this drill is to demonstrate teamwork skill in a drill setting. We will follow the structure in the video in this section. This will be a timed challenge.
The drill begins with a player on the wing, a post player and a line at the top. The player on the wing passes it to the post player. The wing player then cuts to the free throw line. The post player passes it back and the wing player shoots, rebounds and goes to the back of the line. The post player then rotates to the wing, the next person in line passes it to the wing player, after passing the ball to the wing the player they post up, call for the ball and the cycle begins again with players rotating through all the spots.
Time: Teams will have 2 minutes to score as many points as possible before time runs out.
Scoring: Teams will receive one (1) point for each successful shot made after completing the Post Pass Shoot drill.
Ties: In the event of a tie, one cycle is played and the team with the most shots made in the fastest time wins. All teams must have at least five turns per cycle. For example, if a team has three players then two players will go through the cycle twice.
Skills Relay
(3 players)
We are adapting this course based off of the NBA All Star Game Skills Course. Please review the video as a guide on how the course will be structured (course begins at the 35 second mark in the video). Please note: Our course will be modified as a relay race.
Course: The skills course is comprised of three legs: Dribbling & Pass Leg, Sprint Down Court with Layup, Sprint upcourt to a 3 point shot. A total of three players can compete in this relay. Each player will be waiting at each leg of the course.
Scoring: 3-player teams will compete head to head during this challenge. Players cannot advance to the next leg until the particular challenge is successfully completed. Teams will have a total of four minutes to complete the course. Teams will be ranked by the fastest time. The top three schools with the fastest times will be ranked first, second, or third place.
Timing Out: If a team does not complete the course within the four minutes, the clock will stop and a 30 second penalty will be added to the final time for each leg that is not completed in the round for that team.
