The youth are not always aware of the opportunities that exist with promoting a transition to a green economy, and how communities stand to benefit.
The renewable energy conversation is dominated by industry, government and academia, whilst communities, particularly women and youth, are not always included in national discussion on energy policy.
The Green Opportunities Challenge aims to provide an accessible platform for youth to exercise advocacy for an inclusive green economy and just transition that drives job creation and investment opportunities.
The Green Opportunities Challenge plans to capacitate the youth to imagine how renewable energy can be used to impact their communities. The competition will be begin with a regional judging round where teams will compete inter-provincially. The regional finalists will then progress to a national judging round, where exciting prizes are up for grabs for the winning team. The competition will help the youth contextualise a green economy for their own communities and create awareness beyond the classroom by increasing awareness of jobs and career paths in the green economy.
You are encouraged to identify challenges in your home, school or community environments and think about how opportunities in the green economy can help address these issues:
For example:
electricity shortages at home
load shedding disrupting cooking abilities
street lights or traffic lights with no power
food shortages
water shortages
heating / cooling problems in class
litter and pollution
public facilities and local amenities having power outages
