April showers bring May flowers, or so the saying goes. Everyone loves the gorgeous blossoms that the month of May brings, but only some can make these beautiful plants bloom. Some people just don’t have very good luck; they don’t have the gardening hand that others do. This leads to some people's lawns looking like gorgeous paintings, and others looking like death hurled all over them. With that being said, here are some tips so that the next gardening project doesn’t end in chaos.
Perhaps one of the most important tips for gardening is finding the right spot. Sunlight is key-- too much and the plant dries out, but too little and the plant won’t grow. An article on Rutgers, a New Jersey agricultural experiment station, says, “Choose a location that receives a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight each day. Locations with 8-10 hours of direct sunlight each day are ideal for most vegetables.” Rutgers also offers more advice about choosing the best location for a garden, giving even more information about sun exposure, while also offering other valuable tips on gardening.
Another important part of gardening is, of course, water. As it is with all other things in life, water is a key ingredient to growing beautiful flowers and healthy plants. The Spruce, which is an online gardening blog, talks about 20 essential tips for watering plants. One of those tips is: “When a plant, even if it is well-established, looks wilted and under drought stress, water it right away.” The Spruce continues to give good advice on watering plants, along with how to tell if the soil around the plant is dry or over-watered so that a gardener can actually keep their plants alive.
Finally, the most important tip for gardening is to make sure that the plant actually has good soil. After all, if the plant is not getting the proper nutrients from the soil around it, then water can’t even save it. Almanac, a gardening page that talks about 10 basic gardening tips for beginners, says that “Plants depend on the soil for nutrients, stability, and drainage… To grow your best garden, start with well-drained, sandy loam and add as much organic matter as possible.” Almanac goes on to talk about what type of soil is best for plants, along with how to amend it.
There you have it: tips on how to fix a lawn so that it stops looking like a warzone. Now, go embrace the season of spring, and let the flowers bloom in every corner. May is almost here and everyone will need to pick up on some gardening tips if they want their garden to survive and, this year, the weather is crazy!
