Childhood Nostalgia
By Rylie Revercomb and Fallon Rosebraugh
We are all growing every day, and we were all kids, too. Reflecting and remembering things from our childhoods gives us a sensational feeling called nostalgia. Nostalgia is a longing or wistful feeling that people get when remembering happy moments from their past. Let's dig into some of the memorable shows, characters, and movies we selected and, hopefully, you can remember a few.
Bibble is a fan favorite from the Barbie franchise. He is featured in Barbie: Fairytopia and Barbie: Meraidia. He is most commonly recognized for his funny attitude, and his goofy character design. Bibble is Elina’s pet. He is the fun-loving sidekick who cracks out all the jokes in both movies. Bibble is a blue and pink spotted puffball. He gets around by flying with his tiny fairy wings. Throughout the movie, Barbie: Fairytopia, Bibble keeps viewers entertained with his jokes during the journey he and Elina face to defeat the evil fairy. Bibble is definitely a fan favorite and brings nostalgia to the viewers because he is such an icon.
Most Gen Z people can remember the games they played for hours and hours on their parents' phones. We are speaking of Disney Palace Pets, of course. Even though the game only consisted of the same three-step process of getting the pets ready, our little minds found this as peak entertainment. Speaking of pets, what better to talk about than one of the best shows streaming on Netflix at the time, The Littlest Pet Shop. Fans absolutely adored the cute, talking pets. The show even influenced kids to make fashion designs for their pets. The show was about Blythe, a girl who could talk to the pets at a local pet shop. It followed her many adventures. Most of us can admire the constant changes in outfits, and blueprint designs for the pets. This is definitely a personal favorite for some of our younger selves.
I found this show to be very underrated when I was younger. It consisted of British mouse ballerinas, the one and only Angelina Ballerina. The pink ballerina and her mice friends put on plays and shows that influenced most to join ballet. Another movie I found highly underrated when I was younger was none other than Shark Boy And Lava Girl. The movie was about a boy named Max, who went on adventures with the characters in his dreams. The movie consisted of cringy yet amazing special effects, and even cringier songs-- although, a fan of the movie on CommonSenseMedia claims, "I've known about this movie ever since I was 5 years old. I really love it, especially since what Lavagirl said is true: 'Everything that is or was, began with a dream....' Also, just to let kids out there know, if something is thought of somewhere, even in your mind, it exists as long as you believe in it." This is a great representation of how even though this movie came out 17 years ago, it is still beloved by kids today.
Now, on to the aspect of gaming. A game that was extremely popular was Disney Infinity. I can remember running to the back of Target to get a new character and portal for the game. The game consisted of a platform, where you could place different characters and world portals. Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters University, you name it. We may have not known exactly how to play, and we would rather have just run around the map as Mike Wazowski, but it still has a very memorable place in our heart. Forbes magazine states, "Disney Infinity is a giant leap into the toy-meets-video-game world for the House of Mouse. Gorgeous toys, compelling campaigns, online multiplayer and the wide open country of the Toy Box make this a stand-out game for families." Speaking of Disney, another favorite movie of ours, was the House of Mouse: Snowed in at the House of Mouse. The movie was all about Mickey and friends getting snowed in together, with plenty of stories being told whilst they waited for the blizzard to pass. Most kids could probably agree about how this special movie kept us entertained during the holiday season and filled us with Christmas spirit.
I’m sure most of us can remember PBS kids. This channel contains some of the most memorable shows from our childhoods. Sid the Science Kid was always a favorite of mine. As a kid, I found this show very different and unique. Although I hated science, the show brought out a fun side and, as a kid, made me fond of it. The show consisted of Sid and his fellow classmates tackling common science questions young kids tended to have. The show had great songs, and principles that kept young kids entertained. Another PBS Kids favorite is Dragon Tails. The story consisted of two siblings, Emmy and Max, who went on adventures in Dragon Land along with their dragon friends. As a kid, I found the song extremely catchy, and always got excited when it came on the TV. Parents seem to agree, too. As a review on CommonSenseMedia claims, "This is a sweet show where all the characters work together to solve problems. Each episode gently communicates a positive message for kids."
When I was younger, fairies were one of my favorite things. The show Winx Club Had a big influence on this. The show featured a group of best friends, all with different interests and goals. Each season followed different years of school, with different enemies and rivals. The show was heavily influenced by fashion, with each girl having their own sense of style. Polygon states, "Even among other girl-tailored cartoons, Winx Club is notable for having characters who regularly change outfits. They wear fashionable, trendy clothes and change them depending on the episode and location." Another show containing girl superheroes is Totally Spies! The show premiered the adventures of three teenage girls. They lived a double life as spies, fighting off evil.
These shows have all had a great influence on my childhood, bringing joy to my younger self and inspiring me to be like the many characters I saw on TV. All of the shows that I listed were the shows I watched before bed, and first thing in the morning when I woke up. These shows and characters really give a sense of nostalgia that just fills viewers up. Nostalgia is a great feeling to experience, and watching these classic shows can really bring that good feeling back.
