In the United States alone, there are nearly 25,000 unsolved murder cases. However, one case in particular always shows up when people search for unsolved murder cases. This unsolved mystery would be the Zodiac Killer case. This murderer still has yet to be identified, but there have been many drawings depicting the looks of this killer. Survivors and witnesses claim that the killer was a male, around 5 '8 - 5' 9 in height, 190-200 pounds, around 30 years old, stocky build and light brown, curly hair. It is believed that he murdered five people and injured two others, but he claims that he murdered 37 people. How has this killer never been caught? Is the investigation still in process? Let us take a look into the past in 1968.
The Faraday and Jensen Case
It was the night of Dec. 20, 1968, in Vallejo, California. David Faraday, 17 years old, and Betty Jensen, 16 years old, went out for their first date. Many described Faraday as a good student and a handsome young man. People who knew Jensen also had many great things to say about her. She was a talented artist and had many friends at school. They were driving to go to a friend's party but decided to pull off the road into the Lake Herman parking lot. They parked in the spot known as the Lovers Lane spot. There were no witnesses to describe what happened after they parked, but from the evidence left behind, police could get a pretty horrifying idea of what events unfolded that night.

According to The Quester Files, when police arrived on the scene, Jensen was found outside the car with five gunshot wounds in her back. Faraday was also outside the car with a gunshot wound on his head. Faraday and Jensen were both confirmed dead on the scene. It was believed that the gunman shot at the couple before they got out of the car, due to the gunshot holes on their vehicle. This murder left the community shocked and the couple's family in horror.
The Ferrin and Mageau Case
About six months later, the killer would strike again on July 5, 1969. In Vallejo, California, two friends, Darlene Ferrin, 22 years old, and Mike Mageau, 19 years old, drove out to Blue Rock Springs Park to talk. Sitting in the car, they noticed a car pull into the parking lot. Thinking it was the police, Ferrin and Mageau both got their identifications ready. Unfortunately, the car was not the police. According to Zodiac Ciphers, a man with a flashlight got out of his vehicle and headed toward the friends in their car. As he got closer, he opened fire on the car. Ferrin was shot nine times and Mageau was shot four times. Mageau survived the attack and was able to tell the police what the gunman looked like and the car he drove. Ferrin was not so lucky. She was confirmed dead on the scene.

Around 45 minutes after the horrific attack, a 9-1-1 dispatcher got a call from an unknown caller, claiming to have been the one to open fire on Ferrin and Mageau. Telling the dispatcher information that only the killer could have known, he also confessed to being responsible for the murders of Faraday and Jensen. This caller was never identified and it is still a mystery today.
Who is The Zodiac Killer?
After the first three murders and the two attempted murders, the now so-called “Zodiac Killer” wrote taunting letters to the police. The letters contained codes that formed sentences. Many of the codes are still unable to be solved. The Zodiac Killer started each letter with, “This is the Zodiac speaking…” and left a signature symbol with a circle and a cross through it. Although none of the letters containing his name have been decoded, many letters have been solved. According to Action News, the famous 340-Cipher was cracked in 2020 by David Oranchak. The letter contained a written message from the Zodiac Killer, “I hope you are having lots of fun in trying to catch me… I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise all the sooner because I now have enough slaves to work for me." This was one of four almost identical letters the Zodiac Killer sent to different papers in the Northern California area.

The Shepard and Hartnell Case
Not even three months after the Farrin and Mageau incident, on Sept. 27, 1969, in Napa, California, Park Rangers were alerted by a fisherman that claimed he heard people screaming near the lake. To their horror, a man and a woman looked to have been stabbed multiple times and were in critical condition. Let us back up to a few hours prior to this incident. On the night of Sept. 27, 22-year-old college student, Cecelia Shepard, and 20-year-old fellow college student, Bryan Hartnell, were enjoying their time together as a couple near the lake at Lake Berryessa. According to Angelfire, all was going as planned until the couple spotted a man sneaking around in the bushes and noticed he was carrying a gun. The strange man approached the couple and ordered them to tie each other up. Complaining in fear that they would be punished for resisting, the couple was tied up and, to their horror, the man began to stab them profusely.

After the man left the scene, Shepard was left with ten stab wounds and Hartnell with six. After the Park Rangers found the couple, the ambulance was called and they were rushed to the hospital. Hartnell made a full recovery but, unfortunately, Shepard died 48 hours after the stabbing. Not even an hour after the murder, the police dispatch center received a call from a man, claiming to be responsible for the recent murder. The police tracked the phone booth the call was made from and got DNA off the phone, but no suspects were found.
The Stine Case
The Zodiac's last-documented killing was on Oct. 11, 1969; in San Francisco, California, 29-year-old cab driver, Paul Stine, was found shot in the head on the side of the road. According to The Quester Files, his wallet and keys were stolen from the car, leading police to believe it was a robbery gone bad. Police found bloody fingerprints on the car of the potential suspect. After the murder of Paul Stine, the Zodiac Killer was never linked to any other murders. He still sent letters to the police, teasing and taunting them about his identity.

Has Justice Been Served?
To this day, no one has ever been linked to being the Zodiac Killer. There have been a few suspects but no evidence was strong enough to convict them of being the murderer. Will the Zodiac Killer ever be caught? Has their killing spree come to an end? Will justice ever be served? Though society will never know the answer to these questions until the killer has been caught, people can only hope that the murderers killing spree has come to a end and justice will be served.
