Almost a year has passed since Red (Taylor’s Version) was released and, in that time, we have been blessed yet again by the music industry herself with the release of Midnights. If you read the November issue, you might have seen that I did a poll revolving around the album but, unfortunately, I was too busy near the end of October with Ranked rehearsals and writing my other articles for the November issue to write a review on the album. Luckily, I have more time to write now that Ranked is over. Now, with that out of the way, let’s dive into this review!
Before I say anything else, I think it is important for me to mention that I am a diehard Swiftie and have been since I was four years old, so a lot of my opinions may be biased. Moving on from that, I am absolutely in love with the vibe and tone of this album. It is all very chill and laid back, and a lot of the songs still have a pop vibe to them while maintaining that aforementioned laid-back feeling. I will be completely honest, though, it took me a couple of listens to fully comprehend and appreciate the album. That doesn’t mean I do not like it. It is more or so the fact that the album dropped on a night that I was very sleep-deprived and I had forced myself to be awake for the release. Due to that, I was too tired to fully immerse myself in the lyrics. After a few weeks now, though, this album has been on repeat almost constantly, and my vinyl copy is being played a lot. This article is going to be a quick synopsis of the album, and I will also talk about a few of my favorite songs. I would give my thoughts on every song, but there are a lot of songs and only so much room in an article. Now that that’s all been said, let’s get into it.
This album, as a whole, is a masterpiece. Each song has amazing lyrics. The vibes of each song are pretty much perfect, and I will be fighting for my life trying to get tour tickets because, if I don’t hear these songs live, I will be convinced my life was for nothing. (Author's note: I did not get tickets, the whole Ticketmaster situation was a mess and I am broke.) Another thing I love about this album is how similar some songs sound to songs from previous albums. "Lavender Haze" has 1989 vibes, and it is very upbeat. Then, later on in the album, I have to censor the title, "Vigilante Sh*t" sounds like it would be on Reputation. Despite the similarities, though, each song is still unique in its own way, and you get something new with each song and I am absolutely in love with it. A large majority of fans also have raving reviews. One person on Metacritic called the album "A perfect mix between the lyrical ingenuity of folklore/evermore and a refreshing (pop) sound. Especially the B side of the album show her ability to break peoples heart with her music." Switching topics, if you read last month's issue, you may have participated in my Taylor Swift-themed poll. I felt creative (I have writer's block) so this article is going to double as a review of your answers from that poll. Let’s check out those results!
Sadly, there were only five responses to the poll. Despite this, though, there is still a huge fan favorite, "Anti-Hero", which is definitely deserved. The close runner-ups included "Lavender Haze" (one of my favorite songs from the album and possibly her entire discography), "Maroon", and "Karma". These are all impressive songs, no doubt, but I am a little disappointed that "Bejeweled" wasn't chosen by anybody.
Out of all of the options available, nobody picked the same favorite album and, honestly, I love that. I love seeing diverse preferences with Swift's music because of how many different-sounding songs she writes. She really does have something for everyone.
For the final question from the poll, I have just a couple of things to say. First of all, I appreciate the formatting suggestion a lot. I'll keep that in mind for similar polls in the future. Second of all, "slay" to you, too. Finally, I can understand not liking her new music. I get it. Her new music definitely has a less poppy vibe than what she sounded like five years ago. I do, however, recommend diving deeper into the lyrics because they are honestly some of the best I have heard. To each their own, though.
That's a wrap on this article! Swift is one of my favorite artists, so I love when I get the chance to talk about her without getting responses from people who only view her as what the media portrayed her as in the time period between 1989 and reputation. As always, I look forward to next month's issue and having more content for you guys. For now, enjoy the holiday season, and I will be working through the holiday break this month to have more for you guys in our January article. Have a good December and happy holidays!
