With this page, Daisie will be discussing some of the good events that are going on right now throughout the world.
A lot of news outlets nowadays focus on primarily negative topics. It is hard to find any positive stories from any well-known media. This column will be here every month to highlight a collection of "Good News" stories one may have missed.
CLEOPATRA'S TOMB MIGHT HAVE BEEN FOUND
Archaeologist Kathleen Martinez has been on a mission of searching for the lost queen Cleopatra’s tomb for almost 20 years. Ever since the breakthrough discovery of King Tutankhamun’s (also known as King Tut) tomb in 1922, the search has been on for Cleopatra’s final resting place. Popularized in films and stories, the Egyptian queen is often dramatized in a romance with Roman general Mark Anton; however, there is a lot more to know about her. Cleopatra was incredibly intelligent, and was said to have known numerous languages. The hunt for her tomb has been long and hard, but with this discovery of the tunnel, archaeologists believe that they have gotten to a possible entrance.
According to Martinez, the excavation revealed a large religious sanctuary. Hidden inside were over 1500 busts, art, and the most interesting- coins with faces of the well-known Alexander the Great. Another great discovery found within this tunnel is routes leading down to the Mediterranean Sea and sunken structures. Now, the team Martinez has banded together and started to set out on a new adventure, one of underwater excavations. Due to recurring earthquakes, parts of important historical buildings- such as Taposiris Magna (an ancient Egyptian city founded by the Pharoh PtolemyⅡ) - have fallen to the ocean floor. If these tunnels and secret pathways ultimately lead to the Egyptian queen’s tomb, then this would be a revolutionary discovery for everyone, revealing the secrets of her life and who she was.
PINK NORTHERN LIGHTS
On the third of November, incredibly rare pink auroras were pictured in Norway. The reason behind it might sound scary, although the outcome is beautiful. Due to a solar storm smashing into the Earth, a small hole was broken in the planet's magnetic field. According to a tour guide named Markus Varik, the auroras are typically green-- which he says is the color of oxygen being struck by energetic particles-- but purple can apparently appear too, whenever electrons are going deep into the atmosphere, causing them to collide with nitrogen molecules.
Varik told USA Today, “The Northern Lights are always different, never the same.” Like fingerprints, snowflakes, and more, the auroras every night are unique and demonstrate just how connected with nature we are.
NEW ECO FRIENDLY GLASS MADE FROM WOOD
Lead researcher Junyong Zhu and other colleagues from the University of Maryland and the University of Colorado have created a transparent wood, which people are referring to as “the window of tomorrow.” Regular glass comes along with financial and ecological costs. Heat comes through normal windows quite easily and raises people's electric bills, but to even manufacture glass for the windows, over 25,000 tons of carbon is released into the atmosphere. According to the USDA, the transparent wood is five times more thermally efficient than glass and is created without such high emissions.
It is made from the balsa tree, native to South American rainforests. 95% of the trees grow in Ecuador on dense plantations, so it is rather easy to harvest the wood and ship it off. The production of more wood-glass would help to lower our carbon footprint and decrease the financial burden of high electricity bills.
Between historical discoveries that could change everything and the small discoveries that can help save the Earth, this past month has brought even more wonderful things to our attention. Despite all of the negative stories news outlets might show, there is always going to be someone doing something inspirational or kind for another person.
