Preposition Activity

Hey students and parents,

We are all stuck at home without the usual APE equipment and space we use at Hartvigsen, but we still need to move and use our brains. Earlier this year we did a weekly preposition obstacle course in the gym. Our repeated prepositions were:

  • On

  • Over

  • Around

  • In and Out

  • Across

  • Through

I believe most prepositions are easier to learn and understand by doing movements to explore them. So I challenge you to create an obstacle course for a small object (ball, doll, stuffed animal) in your house using everyday objects to go under, over, around and so on. This challenge requires the entire family to work together.

You and your child will move the doll, stuffed animal, sock or other small object through the obstacle course. Here are some ideas…

  • Drop a sock ball into a bowl or a laundry basket

  • Pull a sock ball out of a box or bowl

  • Push a ball through a tube

  • Place a ball under a box

  • Place a ball on a box

Before you start building the obstacle course, please review the preposition signs with your child. Use the same signs after you build the obstacle course to assess if your child can identify which preposition each obstacle represents. Please do this again after your child has gone through the obstacle course a few times.

Be creative and have fun!
