Fine motor skills involve the muscles in the fingers and hands to support activities and functional tasks such as play/engage with toys, writing, school tools use, dressing, self-feeding, and self care tasks.
Placing a toy or object at midline and allowing your student to reach for the item is a great way to observe and encourage a hand dominance when engaging in a fine motor activity.
Here is a list of activities you could try to encourage fine motor skills with your student:
Picking beads/small toys out of playdough
Ripping or crumpling paper
Color-crayons, pencils, sidewalk chalk, finger paint, tec...
Build with cubes/blocks
Use tongs, tweezers or clothes pins to pick up small items
Place a small snack item on the table for your student to pick up with their fingers
Threading to make a necklace or a bracelet with cereal or beads
Inserting coins into a piggy bank
Use glue, paint brush, hole punch, or scissors to make a craft
Peeling off stickers
Dress a baby doll
Putting pegs into a pegboard
Play games-connect 4, pick up sticks, battle ship
Engaging in puzzles
