The Lady Dawgs Varsity Soccer team jumped on Mona Shores early and hung on late for a 2-1 victory, avenging last season’s overtime loss in districts while beating the Sailors for the first time since 2022. The Dawgs scored on two end-to-end passing sequences in the first half. The first goal involved four passes - from keeper Lane Taylor to Shiloh Willoughby to Lilly Holzwarth to Cait Souter to Cadence Drelles, with Drelles thundering a left-footed shot into the roof of the net. The second goal involved just three passes – a pass back from Kendall Gray to Taylor, who one-timed the ball to Gracelynn Saindon, who sent a long pass to Willoughby, who fought off a defender and buried her 8th goal of the season. Mona Shores scored on a header two minutes into the second half, but that was it for the Sailors. Mona struggled mightily to get past Grandville’s suffocating defense and excellent play of senior center back “Mama Bear” Gray and her three sophomore cubs - Lexie Hendrixson, Ellie Kleinheksel and Brynnly Mann.

The Lady Dawgs Varsity Soccer team will head into spring break on a high after defeating a tough Muskegon Reeths-Puffer team 1-0 at GHS on Monday night. Shiloh Willoughby stole the ball at the 23-minute mark of the first half, then dribbled in and beat the Rockets’ keeper far post for her 9th goal of the young season. Although Grandville controlled play in the first half, the Rockets played an inspired second half and pressed hard to equalize. Lane Taylor had seven saves on the night, most of them in the final 20 minutes of the game. Defenders Kendall Gray, Ellie Kleinheksel, Lexi Hendrixson and Brynnly Mann played a high line, hustled back, and made key clearances to preserve the Dawgs’ first shutout of the season. Grandville improved its record to 4-1 on the season, matching its wins total from last season, with each win by a single goal. Talk about GRIT! Grandville starts the OK Red season on Tuesday, April 14 at East Kentwood. Go Dawgs!
