The Sweet Life of Milton S. Hershey
Today, chocolate is extremely popular because it has a very luscious taste. In the past, though, it wasn't nearly as sweet. That came to an end in 1895 when a man named Milton S. Hershey produced his chocolate, Hershey, and presented it to the world. He produced chocolate because of how well liked his other product caramel was. As it grew to be popular, he moved onto chocolate which became a big hit as well. Hershey's part in making sweets for others made numerous people content because of how delicious it was. His creation changed the chocolate industry by improving the taste of chocolate. Although Milton Hershey is mainly known for his fine chocolate, he has also created various things that benefited him and the others around him.
Early Life and Childhood
A man named Milton Snavely Hershey was born on September 13, 1857. He was born in a town of Derry, Pennsylvania. Milton Hershey was the son of Henry and Fanny. Milton's father, Henry, was a man with big dreams who was always on a hunt for a job. As for his mother, Fanny, she was a loyal Mennonite. Milton also had one sibling, a girl named Serina, who unfortunately passed away due to Scarlet fever when Milton was barely at the age of nine. Milton S. Hershey also took part in a family that constantly moved (Milton Hershey). He had already attended a total of six different schools by the time he turned the age of thirteen. Although Milton was a bright kid, it was still difficult for him to keep up. Overall, Milton had a poor education considering that he traveled from place to place every now and then (Milton Hershey). When Milton became an adult and left his home, he soon made the decision to return to where he was raised because he had failed several times doing different things. The place where he grew up had plenty of dairy farms. He had used this to his advantage to create caramel candy. Once his product became popular, he took the risk of selling his caramel factory in order to work on making just chocolate itself. With that commitment made, he constructed an enormous factory along with a town. The town provided a library, a community center, a school, and many more. He succeeded in doing what he had planned in mind (Saphiro).
Beginnings
Milton´s mother, Veronica (Fanny), was the person who influenced Milton´s actions to go down the right path. As soon as she found out that Milton was doing menial jobs, she convinced the owner, Royer, to allow Milton to do as he wished. ¨My boy wants to make candy,¨ said Fanny. After that happened, Milton ended up in Philadelphia with his very own business (Veronica). Milton started off by working many different kinds of jobs. He first ended up working for the Lancaster Caramel Company. The company became a big hit, and Milton was finally earning some good cash. This was the first thing that Milton became known for (Milton Snavely Hershey). He enjoyed working with caramel, though he was more interested in making chocolate. As a result, he sold the Lancaster Caramel Company. After that, Milton Hershey focused entirely on just chocolate hoping that it was the right choice. Working through all these steps and jobs, he created the chocolate, Hershey, that can now be found anywhere. Milton soon became successful by going through a rough path. He didn't know how to do such things. One of his men once stated that Mr. Hershey ¨just found out the hard way¨. Although he had a difficult time reaching where he is now, he resulted in becoming successful (Milton Snavely Hershey).
Accomplishments
After failing three times, Milton tried again, ending up with his creation of Hershey's Chocolate on his fourth try (Milton Hershey - Accomplishments). If Milton didn’t attempt to succeed again, he wouldn’t have gotten the result of Hershey chocolate. After gaining massive amounts of money off of Hershey chocolate, he decided to do good deeds for the people around him. He came up with useful things that people needed. Milton achieved various accomplishments such as creating a town that included numerous things such as farms, houses, hospitals, and even schools. Everything he has made has helped tons of people. For example, if someone were to get sick, they could go to Hershey’s hospital. These creations changed his life as well as the people around him. He made things that would be accessible to many. Milton also constructed an orphanage school for boys. Over time, it transformed into a school for both boys and girls (Milton Hershey - Accomplishments). Despite making a chocolate bar available to everyone, he also made one specially for soldiers. The soldiers had named it a “Field Ration D bar”. They enjoyed it, and it motivated them to continue throughout the day. Milton has done amazing things that benefited him and others over his years of working. He extended his limits and even created different chocolates like Krackel and Mr. Goodbar. Though, his dedicated work continues to make a difference in the world (Milton Hershey - Accomplishments).
Impact on the World
Milton Hershey positively impacted the world by creating ¨a palatable confection and a most nourishing food. The taste of chocolate completely changed after his creation. Through his time of working beyond to produce an outstanding chocolate product, he decided to lower prices so that everyone will be able to enjoy the taste. He offered milk chocolate as ¨an affordable treat for anyone¨. People could actually start to look forward to something such as eating a treat that they are able to buy (The Hershey Company). The environment shifted because of how he has helped plenty of people out. For example, he created a chocolate cigarette that was made to help people get addicted to it instead of smoking. Since smoking may possibly destroy your lungs, chocolate will only make you satisfied with what has been consumed. For people struggling with tobacco, Milton had this made specially for them. He also marketed chocolate to athletes. In order for them to maintain or to gain energy, they could eat chocolate to recover the energy used. Since he made all these useful items, the world has only gotten better (The Hershey Company).
Lessons learned from their life
All in all, Milton S. Hershey is a very honorable and considerate man. He continued to think of others as he grew to be successful. He became great and received positive feedback from the people around him because of his thoughtful and kindful acts towards them. He even created multiple things for others. He also got people out of their bad habits by making things that will get them into that product instead of the one that is damaging them. Although he was starting to rise higher than them, he still considered those around him to be able to enjoy something as well (The Hershey Company). The lessons helped by allowing me to learn that when I grow successful in life, I still have to remember and think about those around me. After all, Milton shared his money by constructing various useful things. He has inspired me by motivating me to not give up and to never always just think of yourself. He is a really awesome figure to look up to because he admitted defeat. Through all that hard work, Milton Snavely Hershey created the world known Hershey chocolate.
